I set up my trail cam last night for the first time
« on: July 16, 2008, 05:31:47 AM »
My son and I set up our new trail cam last night for the first time, We will check it in a few days to see what we get,  saw some real nice Elk tracks and a HUGE buck track along with some fresh doe tracks, I hope we can get a glimpse of the buck.  We also saw some Kitty tracks and scat. The strange thing was we think we also saw a Bobcat track as well, it was hard to tell, could have been a young cougar track but was definately NOT a yote track.

How often do you guys check your game cams?

Mine are close to home so I'm out there about once a week.  I'm afraid if I go out any more than that I'm going to scent the place up.

Checked my Stealth Cam camera on Sat. and was supprised to find my film (yes, its a 35mm version) had all been taken 24 exp. I went and had it developed at a 1 hour place and was completely dissapointed. None of the pics had any animalsin them. Can little branches set off the camera. I also didn't have a big tree to set it up on and had to strap it on a young fir tree, I wonder if the tree moved from the wind and caused it to go off automatically. I did catch a nice sunset on a few pics.

Any ideas? this was the first time I have used a game cam.

Gobble if you are getting Sunsets your camera is facing West. Try to always set it up facing North. (or South) It will keep the Sun from hitting your lens. Also if the wind blows branches or tall weeds around in front of your camera it will trigger it. Remove the limbs and weeds from in front of the camera when you set it up. Birds flying by will also trigger it. But you have to have a camera with a fast trigger speed to get the bird in the frame. I believe Wally World only makes you pay for the Pictures you want. It might save you some money?  That's why I recommend Digital Game Cams. Good Luck

Thanks Slider,

I'll try that this week, it had to be moving branches that set it off. Didn't know that about Wally World, funny you said that, my mom said the same thing last night. I'll probably buy a digital one later this week., it will be nice to be able to check the pics in the field.

I just got my camera back yesterday was out for three weeks, had a total of 751 pictures. The battery was dead 5 days ago so I probably could have got more. After deleting all the bad ones (because I faced the camera west, and had it attatched to a small sapling) I got 329 good ones!!

Here are a couple.

Nice pics! The eastside is sooo much easier to set up a cam, not so much underbrush :chuckle:
