Commission will focus on hunting permits,

OLYMPIA - The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will consider increasing the number of multiple-season hunting permits available each year after hearing public comments on the issue at a meeting scheduled Jan. 6-7 in Olympia.

The commission, which sets policy for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), also will accept public comments on proposed changes to the 2012 sportfishing rules, but will not take action on those proposals until its regular meeting in February.

The public meeting is scheduled to convene Jan. 6 at 9:30 a.m. and Jan. 7 at 8:30 a.m. in Room 172 of the Natural Resources Building, 1111 Washington St. S.E. in Olympia. An agenda is available on the commission’s website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/commission/ .

Multiple-season hunting permits allow selected hunters to hunt for deer or elk during all general hunting seasons, rather than having to choose among archery, muzzleloader or modern firearm seasons. Hunting data show that the wider range of options increases hunters’ chance of success in the field.

WDFW has proposed increasing the number multiple-season hunting permits available each year to 8,500 deer permits and 1,250 elk permits. In 2011, WDFW conducted a drawing for 4,000 deer permits and 850 elk permits from among the hunters who paid an application fee. 

State wildlife managers say increasing those permit levels will not pose a risk to Washington wildlife, adding that fees generated by applicants for a higher number of permits would be used to expand efforts to prevent property damage caused by wildlife.

I don't like it at all. Already too many extra hunters in the other seasons that they don't take near serious enough. Now add more unready bowhunters and muzzy blasters to the mix. Just awesome.

Wow thats a lot of deer tags which will in turn be a lot more wannabe bowhunters on the eastside for the late hunts would be my guess. I wish they would take a portion of those multi season tags and make them youth tags at an affordable price so our kids could experience hunting with different weapon types. Its hard to justify the $180 for the little bit most kids will get to use them so a price break would be great.nwhunter

Does anyone believe they've not already made up their minds?  When the state is in a severe budget crunch, why not just admit these meetings are essentially meaningless, and cancel them?  We can send comments via email or letters.

I already know it's a done deal, why bother going to the meeting?  I'm not necessarily against it anyway. I know they're only doing it for the money, but I hope to draw at least one of the multi-season tags, so it benefits me.

They should just cancel all Commission meetings and save themselves some time.  They always have their minds made up ahead of time anyway.

I'm surprised they even have multiseason permits. I'm surprised they don't just give everyone a chance to buy the multiseason permit.  After all this is all about revenue right?

They can't let us kill ALL the deer and elk. Gotta save a few for the wolves.

Forgot about that.  Of course, when there are few elk and deer, but lots of wolves, we'll have an opportunity to apply for permits to hunt wolves in multiple categories (for a separate fee per category).  I can hardly wait to apply for my Quality Wolf permit.

Bob, it will be a quality damage control tag for non alpha males. You will be called on an as needed basis. The tag will be $420 and the permit application will be $12 each, but no points will carry over and you can buy up to 40,000 permit applications a year.

Ouch!  I wonder if we will have to pick our weapon and region?  Eastside archery wolf, Westside muzzy wolf?  Will there be a "true wolf" only area?  Man, I'm getting a headache...

I am sorry for assuming you would know about the season declaration. It will not be a "true wolf" it will be a "non alpha male" tiger stripe coloration only. And you must apply for a discovery past pass also.
