Elk Unit 1010/GMU 163
« on: December 28, 2011, 10:58:08 AM »
Are these areas worthwhile for late archery elk or are the elk mostly on private/inaccessible lands?

Few ranchers will let you hunt...emphasis on the "few"  :twocents:

It's worth a little gas in the summer to do some talking  :twocents: at that time of the year most are done hunting and the elk are just starting to cause problems for the ranchers. Knock on some doors and get some numbers to work with from home  :twocents:

I hunted there a couple of years ago, but it is mostly private.  The only elk we saw was decent 6x6 and he was running from Bigfoot.  I couldn't decide whether I should take a shot with my bow at bigfoot or get a picture to prove to Colokumelk that bigfoot was the real culprit behind the dwindling elk numbers.  Because of my hesitation I didn't get a shot with the bow or the camera and with no pictures it didn't really happen.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Thanks guys.  I figured there must be a catch to having an archery season open that late.  Sounds like the typical WDFW answer to whittling down the problem elk on private lands that the State is forking out damage $$ to land owners, with the catch that you can't hunt em unless you own the land or know the owner.  Oh well, time to start looking forward to September  :)

If the ranchers are not letting people hunt on their land, they should not be getting $$ for damages.  I see this, all too often.  a hunting area is open and if you don't know the person, you can't hunt the land.  Then because the elk see this as a safe area, they move in and do their own thing.  Hunting by permission only, is okay, but give the permission and let it be known, openly, it is on a permission basis only.  Most hunters are extremely careful and reapectful.  Don't let ATVs in or allow driving off-road and you will cut down the amount of those who like to go 'hog-wild' in an area.

You can get access on the wind property. Do some research and you can find access. There is also state land.

sounds like some people want to ride around on quads andsave energy. unless you are handi-cap or lazy. find  flat ground. i would kill for the chance to have access to hike miles just to get to where i wantto hunt., and then drop into a canon from there.
