back and forth
« on: December 29, 2011, 10:43:46 AM »
looking at a .308 ar.  only hang up is do i want a 20 or 26 inch barrel?  It will be an all around rifle.  not sure if the extra barrel length would be worth packing around on an already heavy rifle.  whatcha think.....

a short .308 barrel has a similar ballistics curve/terminal energy to a 300 savage.  Less velocity.  The shorter barrel might be perferable if you plan to hunt with it and carry it.

If you hunt wetside I would suggest the shorter. Both I would try to find one in the middle. Eastside I would say go longer. What's the furthest shot you will want to make? I'd base the decision on that.

how far you want to shoot, and how much weight you want to pack?

here in wa i hunt the wet side but im military and back home is farther shots.  i already have a gun for that.  im looking at a coyote/ deer gun that would  probably not be shot past 300yd.  im leaning towards the 20 but still not set.  i dont care about weight.  functionality outweighs the weight.  i have other guns to pack long distance

Shorter barrel means quicker target acquisition and less weight and less to hit a twig or branch when you're lining up a shot. I'm sure the 20" would do you well. What twist rate though?

Since you said weigh doesn't matter I would go with longer hands down. Not many times a shorter barrel will benefit you... can't think of any actually. Pros outweigh cons... more velocity and energy with longer.

If you are concerned about 4" of barrel weight or swinging 4" extra inches, maybe you should get out more offen or consider a gym membership, rather than a new piece of hardware. 4" inches of barrel isn't worth the discussions. Purchase the 26" , be done with it and enjoy!

I read back through all the posts on this thread but couldn't find the word " Wuss " used once. I love the drama though. What do you expect, when a guy has to ask others on barrel length? Make a command decision and go with it, half the clowns on the Internet couldn't find their hindend with both hads let along give advice worth a chit concerning firarms.

Are those the only two options?  Sometimes you can find a good deal on just two barrel lengths.  If so, maybe consider getting the 24" and taking to a smith to cut to an inbetween length.  I personally don't see any issue with 20" barrels for 300 yds.
My experience is wetside rainforest and long barrels can suck.  It is not the weight, but the length that gives me problems.  Bumping trees, low branches, etc.

I would say this is the best advice in this thread.

Are you set on the AR10 frame or are you still thinking about using an AR15 frame (different cartridge)? For wetside hunting that 450 bushmaster looks awful tough to beat. I keep eyeballing this one myself.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.
