Manastash and Umtanum Pics?
« on: July 17, 2008, 07:41:04 PM »
Does anyone have any pics from these units I dont care if they are of animals or not, I would like to see what it looks like. I drew the Observatory A Tag for Rifle bull. I plan on putting the miles in, I have 9 days off of work.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

I have spent some time in your hunting area.  I hope to do some archery hunting for elk in the Manashtash unit this fall.  There is a lot of good country to look in.  Some pretty good bulls too.  I have seen bulls in many spots.  If you had the Nachees and Bumping figured out, you should be able to figure this one too.  The country is pretty much the same.  Roads everywere and old camp sites.  You should get the jump on most hunters though.  I will keep you in mind if I see any bulls.  After the rut they may go elsewhere.  If I can locate you a bull I would hope to get the location of a good whitetail buck in your neck of the woods.  I have a few pics, very similiar to the Nachees.

Last one is from Yellowstone.  He is a stocky guy.  I'll let you know if I see one close to this size.

you help me get a nice bull and you can count on a nice whitetail. I passed close to 30 animals last year before taking the one I did. It helps when you see them every day (living where they live). I have gotten two bucks since 05 that have scored 180 or over. If you can help put me in the direction of a nice bull I will do the same for you on a nice whitey. GMU 101 is the one I now best, it opens Nov. 10th for archery with no late rifle hunters in it at all, doesn't close until the 15th of Dec. The bucks are dumb...

Teacherman,

Grew up hunting and camping in this area.  I have hunted it many times for elk just not with the branched bull tag.  Would be more than happy to point you in the right direction.  As mentioned above there are lots of roads, lots of hunters, and lots of elk that move through the area.  Shoot me a PM or an email.

I can help you with some great spots. Been hunting there for years and years. I have helped 2 of my pals with getting there bulls with a muzzy tag the last few years. I have a pal that has a archery tag this year and one more with a muzzy tag so as the scouting progress we can fill you in. Are you going to make a scouting trip or two???

Ya I'm planning on making it over for a few days, helps having the summers off as a teacher, but I still have to take care of my two daughters. The pick that you are packing out the mule deer in, where are the trees? looks like your hunting down along the Snake...
I think Im going to start off of the North East side of Bald Mt. Toward Wiskey Flats, at least that area looks good on a map...Never been in it, but not afraid to walk, if I get 3-4 miles off of the road any where there should be elk...

The pick of the mule deer is in L.T. Murray area. The background is Ellensburg( I think). That area has some nice bulls in there some years. It used to have a lot of nice bucks when it was permit only. Show some other pics of that buck if possible. My buddy took a 360 inch bull out of there a few years back. The draws are huge and most people just overlook them. The l.t. murray herd ranges from there to the observatory area. The area you are talking about by Manashtash lake is a good area. It is thick and steep but holds alot of animals. Another good area is the north slope of Mt. Clemans. If you want P.M me and I will tell you more.

I been hunting it for years and got my Observatory C tag this year :IBCOOL: I hunt trad archery and am looking to have an awesome season. Last year I had 2 branched bulls 10 feet in front of me but couldnt do s@#t about it! If you got wheels get up on top of Frost Mountain and use the glass, you can see the whole unit from there. If you dont have wheels it is still worth the hike. I will be all over the ridge from Quartz Mountain to Manastash Lake, Great country in there. I will be up from the 5th until the 22nd YAHOOO!!! will keep ya posted

This will be my first year bowhunting AND my first year elk hunting. Always been a rifle hunter for deer.  Just looking to stick a cow (or spike if the opportunity is presents itself).  Spent this past weekend scouting Rimrock and Nile units.  Only saw 3 elk in Rimrock. Nothing in but 2 deer in Nile, but that unit seemed more open, which I like.  Disappointed with my lack of finding any elk.  I feel like I'll be wandering like a lost tourist.  I didn't have time to make it over to Manashtash, but was through there briefly a few years ago and know it holds elk.

I'm leaning towards setting up either in Nile or Manashtash, but will basically be scouting while hunting.  This will be a big learning year and my expectations are pretty low at actually getting my first bow kill, but that's okay.  I'll be out the last 10 days of the archery season (Sept 12-21), as I've heard later is better for weather and the rut?  Any thoughts on that?

Good luck to everyone else.  If I stumble across any nice bulls, I'd be happy to share that info with those carrying bulls tags.

I have been scouting the Umtanum and the Manatash units for elk. Talking to the Game Bio, the cattle in the Manastash unit will keep the elk out. The area south of Manastash ridge is full of cattle and will be until about the first part of October. We didn't get to spend much time the area north of the ridge. My dad,, brother and I drew the Observatory any elk tag for archery and have been looking for some decent bulls. We did finda an area this last weekend that looks promising with lots of fresh sign. We will also be up there from Sept. 12-21 hoping the rut is kicking in by then. Good luck to all.

call me I know the unit well and will be there helping my muzz friend on oct 1 kill a monster.  I killed a 360 bull and was #1 in 2003 check NW biggame for record book. May be #4 now but owwell.  management works. we are soon to exceed our environment limits but  WA has shown it can produce 400 class bulls which everyone in US will soon recognize.  W.
