Black widow bow
« on: January 20, 2012, 12:24:33 PM »
I'm about to pull the trigger and buy a Black widow PCH 60" @ 52 pounds. I have done some traditional archery in the past. I'm a hoyt compound shooter now.
Your thoughts about the black widows?

They make great bows.  Especially for being mass produced as compared to many other custom trad bows.  I went with the blacktail, but hey, Blackwidow was on my list.

I have shot 8 or 9 of them and always liked the way they shot. I figured I would end up with one of there bows. I just happen to have a friend who is building me a even better bow

I shoot a hoyt dorado and have had a game master before as well. The dorado is a killer recurve and for being a hoyt guy I would look at them. They also have a newer bow that Fred built/designed with them called the buffalo it is supposed to be a nice bow as well.

Nice bows, but really think 52# is a little bit much for a 1st trad bow.... lets say you are currently shooting a 60# compound, at 80% let off... you are hoilding 12 pounds?  I made the jump awhile ago, and started off at 50@28... well with my almost 30" DL, that turned into 58 at my fingers... adn developed some bad habits.  Since then I bought a light bow (32#) to work and develope form with.... if you can get a clean release at 32#, then you will be awesome at higher poundages... best thing about a light DW bow, is the ability to practice for hours, and not have your form breakdown.  I'd get the BW and also get a cheaper recurve that is a light poundage to train on...   Now my opinion is the BW's are good bows, somewhat over rated, but still good bows.

Great bows wish I would have never sold mine but... what do you do! I agree with the heavier poundage but you could also order a second set of limbs if the model you're looking at is a take down.

Thanks all. Great inputs and I'll take all of them into consideration before I pull the trigger on another bow.

you might take a look at Danny Crofts bows, he has been building them for a long time, If I remember they are called a critter gitter. He is a local guy, Doug might have is contact information at Great North West

Don't forget to check the one of the sponsors of this site.  Pacific Yew Bows are good with the added bonus of the history behind their bows.  Remember some people worked hard to prove the legitimacy of archery hunting.

I'd get one of Danny's bows, it is the Critter Gitter, originally designed by Gerald Hickman (who still holds the IFAA World records for Trad).  Doug at GNW can get you in touch with him, if not I can.  Danny is one of the best shooters of a recurve in the US, and really knows his stuff.

I've always been kinda fascinated with that bow. I like the look in graybark. If you could swing it, go with two sets of limbs and like NW and JBar said get the other set alot lower for technique/practice/stumpshooting.

I started doing a lot of reading (Advanced instinctive shooting for Bow hunters – Fred Asbel) on the traditional archery and listening to you guys also. One of the biggest issues one can have is with too much poundage; this really has an effect on form. I like the idea of having a hunting poundage and a “practice poundage” limbs. Might look into to see if I can swing it financially.

they have a program where you can test there bows its on there website you have to pay the price of the bow up front but they refund it after you send it back and it only cost you shipping might be a good way to see if the poundage is something you like or if you need to start lower
