Pasture Elk
« on: January 21, 2012, 07:58:27 PM »
Well earlier this year I was drawn for a Mster Hunter Damage permit in SKagit River. Got called on Wenesday and met with land owner on Friday at 9am.
By 10 am i was sitting under old growth fir watching a 65  acre feild. With a herd of 30 just across the fence. several bulls. I was restricted to a cow only. it rained and snow dropped from the trees still I sat hour after hour waiting for a elk to cross the fence. At 3 pm at the farest Corner the herd pressed up to the fence. At 3:05 pm a lead cow and another jumped the fence.

I was running out of day so I decided since this was the first day to see how close I could stalk. I went down the fence line closer and closer. At 50 yards the lead cow started to get nervous and turned broad side. I sent a 30.06 165 grain soft point her way and hit her at the shoulder crease. She jumped fence and I watched as she ran out of  my hunt area and colasped in 2 fet of snow on private property.

I had been warned to cross the fence because the property owner was a hard case. What to do. Called 911 for a game agent after none I had on speed dial picked up. As I was walking back to my truck to unload and regroup. The renter next door came to the fence.
He asked if I had shot an elk I said yes but I ws sorry it jumped the fence on yourside. He said NO Problem come on over lets get your elk.

Wow a real nice guy. Once i got to the elk i new we need help 100 yards from the road in snow. I started dialing friends. My son headed up to help with a friend and a friend of mine from Birds veiw showed up with a snow Machine. We tied the elk to the sled and he took off for the road with it. Thats was great.  Loaded in my sons truck as he needed weight than had to unstick all the rigs except mine which were bogged down in the thawing 1/4 mile drive way. Hour & Half late we hit 20 on our way to Mt. Vernon.

Since I had no place to hang it we put it on a  table in my G and i skinned it out. Cut off the hind quarters and hung them on a ladder.

Took it ot a butcher today T nT wildgame. It tipped  the scale at 400 lbs.

Picked up a small freezer on way home off Craigs  List.

Not the kind of hunt I am use to but filled the tag I had in my pocket.

looks like a nice cow! some good eating for sure.  I got my MH certification 2 years ago, haven't had an opportunity to draw a tag yet.
