Prince Of Wales Is. bear hunt and fishing.
« on: January 27, 2012, 05:55:30 PM »
Ribka and I are looking in to a bear hunt and I thought I would see if there is anyone that has done it or has any advise  :dunno:

We are looking at a DIY spring hunt and some fishing in the fresh and salt water, so its time to do the research.

I would do a search on here if you have not already. There has been a few good topics about it. One was not to long ago if I remember right. I know a few guys on here have done them.

You guys will have a blast,  I hunted north of the ABC last spring out of Juneau and am planning to go back again this year.  Just going a week later hoping for a better green up.

just spoke to my friend on POW and said not much snow , cold weather in SE AK this year. He is already seeing bears.

Looks like might start greening up a bit earlier this year.

I worked up there in 1981 for a summer.  TONS of bears when I was there.  Thornbay was the log sorting yard for LP.  The fishing was fantastic for Silvers.

Heck, the locals shot the crap out of them from a bed of a dump truck at the dump.  I remember they killed six in one evening.  Crazy amount of bears....

3,500 dollars is not too much.

I've hunted POW island spring bear every year since 2008.  Love it up there.  First hunt was a solo float plane drop off hunt at the south end of the island.  That was with RDM Pilot, had a blast.  The following three years was out of Coffman cove at the north end of the island.  Two years I stayed with Coffman cove adventures (outfitter who supplied rig, skiff, cabin and food). Great outfit, nice people.  Last year I took the whole family and we rented a cabin, cooked for ourselves, rented a suburban, etc.  had lots of fun.  This is the perfect location for spring bear.  Lots of them.  We would cruise the protected coastline looking for bears on the beaches or drive around looking for a "ditch" bear.
This spring is the last season that you can really hunt POW island without a guide for black bear.  The guides on POW island lobbied for a got approved a rule that now requires non residents to enter a drawing for a non res bear tag and I think there will only be about 30 available.   Guiding cost was about 4500 bucks for a week, maybe more now that you have to be guided.  This will start this fall.
pOW island is the perfect place for a DIY hunter, easy access, lots of bears, and variety of terrain.
My 12 year old boy and I each got a nice bear last year.  Can't figure out how to post the pics.

Which part of POW?  I worked on POW near Ketchikan and can give you some pointers if that is somewhat close to where you will be.

Well we are staying at http://www.logcabinresortandrvpark.com/hunting.html in Klawock.

Where we hunt is going to be weather dependent  :dunno:

Our goal is to get over to Dall Is. and hunt there but if the weather dont cooperate, that aint going to happen  :'(

Other Wise we will be hitting the shore  line on either side of the island but I think we are going to concentrate on the southern portion of the Island. 12 mile arm and Polk Inlet are a few places we have been advised to check out and we will probably work some of the Islands West of Kalwock. Don't know exactly yet, but the weather will dictate where we go.

you should be able to find someplace to go with most weather.  If you have a vehicle there are many miles of roads to explore.  there used to be steelhead spawning every month of the year somewhere on the island if you have the time.
