spur of the moment trip to oahu... what gear would you bring???
« on: February 24, 2012, 02:56:13 AM »
my friend and i are trying to put together a trip to Oahu to visit a friend, do a little camping, pay respects to pearl harbor, just to see what its all about, we will probably be living out of a backpack for a week, so, gotta keep things to a minimum, but, what gear would you bring to fish the surf/beaches?

more importantly, what would i be trying to catch? and how are they to eat? being 3 broke college students, im thinking it might be a source of a free meal.....

im thinking of bring my shimano convergence 10 1/2 footer with my garcia ambasseduer 6500, i got about 300 yards of 50lbs braid on it, which should be totally fine

what tackle would you guys use?

im gonna bring some rapala saltwater plugs, poppers, some yo-zuris, some kastmasters, pt wilson darts/casting jigs, and your standard hooks weights ect...

might bring the flyrod with some big 6/0 clousers i tied up for lingcod, and a bunch of smaller ones, crazie charlies, minnow/shrimp patterns.... i dont wanna overload my pack, so...

if anybody here has any experiance fishing hawaii, it would be great to hear what you have to say.... im also gonna check out bloody decks

Not a ton of help here but I was on Maui last week and I saw a ton of locals fishing but they were all using long plunker rods and casting from shore.  Letting the bait sit until it was picked up.  I am not entirely certain what they were using for bait.

There was enough of them doing it that they must catch something that way.  I didn't see any using any spinners, top water etc and definitely no fly rods.

First find out which part of the Island you better not infridge upon, alot of "local only" areas that are not taken to kindly to "Halees" camping in their spots.  I lived there for three years quite a few years ago, just be aware of the area your planning on camping.  I would go to the local PD and ask what spots or beaches to avoid for nighttime adventures...  Oahu has some rough spots for sure, especially towards the west end of the island.

In regards to fishing, always remembered folks fishing off the rocks near the blow hole on the east end, and of course the North shore area there is multiple areas... Bloody Decks would be a great start..

yeah... im fully aware of that, kinda has me worried a little, as its me and 2 girls (so i gotta be the smart one). i had a friend who was 1/2 hawaiian 1/2 white, and even she told me how rough it was for her dispite growing up there and looking the part/speaking the language... i hear hawaii is like one giant indian reservation, but the indians are huge angry sasquatch (samoans, polynesians ect) like creatures that hate anything white with a passion

LMAO! At least you could die a happy man! Fishing and 2 gals!  :o  And the fishing is FREE! no lic necessary for fishing the ocean! I would do some quick internet search, and would also say that wahtever wally workd is selling for fishing tackel there, probably works.

That's too bad. If you were still going I would have suggested that you take a medium action rod with 25# test mainline and buy your tackle when you get there. The best tackle I have found are the Mark White lures. Attached below is a pic of one of my favorites. I would also recommend the black. I would have taken a pic of it too but lost it to a 35 plus pound Trevally. Your presentation of these will get the most action if you just flat out rip it across the surface. Just this last year, I found a guy whipping on a rocky structure and he happened to be fishing the same lures and hammering them. I walked over and instantly recognized him as Mark White. We talked for an hour and I learned a lot from the mainlander with an art degree who has made quite a living making very popular fishing tackle on the island of Kaui. Anyway, I hope this helps for the next time when the trip doesn't fall through.
