No more "any elk"
« on: March 01, 2012, 04:27:49 PM »
I heard that they were doing away with the "any elk" in the north east. Has anyone heard anything like this? Heard modern and muzzleloaders were going to be bull only. Whats your thoughts? I am glad, hopefully elk numbers will increase.

It looks to me like archery is still "any elk" in the NE, but muzzleloder and modern firearm are "any bull".

(if they adopt the proposals without change)

Modern and Muzzleloader have always been any bull as far as I can remember. But if they keep the proposed season which I'm sure they will they are taking away the "any elk" late archery season. This, IMO, is rediculous. At best, this will probably only save a handful of cows, but it makes the entire late season up there pretty much worthless.   :bash:

By the way, elk numbers have been increasing for the last 10 years. So why start moving toward limiting harvest? I'm suspicious it's not the hunter the WDFW is looking to benefit in the long run. But I'm a pessimist when it comes to the WDFW and their motives...

They are probably starting to do away with the any elk ticket to build up the herds there. Remember the wolves are here and will keep coming. Hunters will take it in the shorts first, and theyll keep paying. hahahahaha. They never wanted to build herds up for hunters but now they have to to feed the wolves.

Modern firearm and muzzleloader will be any bull. Archery will be any elk only in the early season. Also MF and ML will get 40 cow tags each if the current proposal is accepted. This is from talking with Dave Ware.

as I see it be thankful they made it cow permits. I'm sure it's a money thing due  to the popularity of these hunts over the last couple year. I'm really surprised they are giving out cow tags not bull tags. I would be thankful you can still hunt any bull  :twocents:

As long as I still have the oppoutunity to tag out on bulls larger then spikes over there I do not mind.  Could be right about the herds and wolves though.

I agree Tommy although I believe it is the moose population that will be hardest hit by the wolves.
