lings in LaPush

I'm looking for advice on fishing for lingers out of LaPush.  I have a 20 1/2' Hewes Craft with a 115 honda.  what is the water like? where will the fish be?  I have not had my boat out on the big pond yet and need some info.  Any help is appreciated! Looking forward to some big lings and bass!

Welcome PNW Junkie! Big water is different, I would suggest you take an expereinced big water person out with you. Gotta be someone around your local gun club, church, or where ever you hang out that would go out fishing with you. You have plenty of boat, get some out with you to show you how!

I was stationed up there in the early '70's, the water can get nasty. Pick a nice calm day but then again it can still pick up. I had a call for a troller that capsized way up past Cake Rock and it was F.A.C. when we left in the morning and sometime after I got the troller in tow (capsized) and headed south for LaPush the wind started picking up. When the tow line finally parted we were in 12-15' seas and it was blowing pretty good. That all happened in a matter of a couple hours. I wouldn't go out without a kicker motor. As for the lings, never fished while I was up there. Maybe find a rock pile up by Cake Rock. I think the local Guide that fishes outta LaPush is Jim Richeson. He's usually got a report on the Salmon U. website. Be careful and have fun. Tight lines.

If you've never fished out of Lapush before you may want to follow someone else out of the marina and across the "bar", or you might end up losing the lower half of that Honda....

If you make it out be careful cause the spring weather can turn quick...

As for locations......well the bass hang on the humps and the lings like structure...

Watch the weather, the tides, then back to the weather. Boating safely is harder than the ling fishing. As far as that goes, metal jigs, live bait, herring, and my fav, big white curly tail grubs on lead heads. Fish the ricks, kelp lines, reefs, that kind of stuff. Double check your regs, triple check the weather, and dont be afraid to bag the trip if the wind picks up.

Back to the early '70's. We fished around the corner from Pt. Wilson and we just used pipe jigs at the time. I hooked a greenling and sent 'im back down. A little bit later I feel this heavy pull so I start reeling in. We were only in about 40-50 of water in by the kelp and a rocky bottom. I get this thing to the surface and it's a huge ling and he's got ahold of the green not even hooked. My buddy goes to gaf this guy and he hits the ling side ways and misses!!! So he goes after him again and nailed him good with the gaf and pulls 'im in the whaler. He wasn't even hooked and he wasn't about or couldn't let go of the green ling. Get him in to town and weigh 'im and he hits 44lbs.. That was back when we could keep three. Always limited out off Foulweather Bluff and Double Bluff also. Don't know what it's like now days. A GPS is a must for the big water. Weather can be bad, then again its been nice if we watch for windows, and is a great place to fill the freezer! Last pic is my home made Ling killer for deeper fishing!

Check this site out, loads of information and plenty of boats to buddy up with. Maybe even put in a search for the "rockpile", its great fishing there early in the year before it gets raped during halibut season.

Be real careful if there is a south wind. Worst possible direction for lp. Fishing can be good, but can also get really ugly in a hurry during the earlier seasons.
