pixels?????
« on: March 08, 2012, 01:45:17 PM »
I'm looking at getting a Nikon D50 that is only 6.1 Megapixels. Is that good? I see cameras with 12 and even more.
I'm very nieve but what is the diff? Quality?
Don't go with the lower?
Thanks

More pixels allow you to crop your images down and not lose as much quality. If you are looking at poster size images for your wall you are going to want a higher pixel count. If you never go bigger than 12x8 you will be fine with the 6.1.

That being said, there are loads of pre owned cameras out there for relatively little money, not sure why you would settle on a 6 mp camera when you can find 8mp cameras for $200

It shoots 3008x2000 RAW so you will have some flexibility in post processing but it does not shoot RAW+JPG, better plan picking up a decent post processing software too. :twocents:

Six megapixels is on the low end by current standards, but it is not the only factor that determines picture quality.  A 6 MP Nikon DSLR will outshoot virtually every compact 10 to 14 MP camera because of the larger sensor size. Pixels sell, but sensor size is more important.  The nice thing about cameras with interchangeable lenses is that you can purchase a newer camera body at some point, and continue to use the lenses you have.
