Browning A bolt 30.06 for my wife?
« on: March 10, 2012, 11:25:21 AM »
I have an opportunity to buy a Browning A bolt 30.06 with Leupold 3x9 for a good price.  I need to buy rifle for my wife.  Do you guys think my wife can handle it as far as recoil.  I have very little experience with Browning or the 30.06 caliber.  Its about a 15 year old rifle and used very little.  Just getting all of your thoughts.  Thanks for the info.

Yes I think it would be great my girlfriend and I both shoot an a-bolt II
Hers in. 270 wsm and mine in. 325wsm she is pretty small 4"10 and the recoil for her is not bad at all. If you are getting it in 30-06 there are some managed recoil loads available. So recoil shouldn't be a problem.

I have the same rifle, but in 270, and recoil would be a bit much for my wife, especially from a bench. The 30-06 will have similar recoil to my 270, but of course it all depends on what weight bullet you are shooting. The A bolt is a relatively light rifle so it will kick pretty good if you use heavy bullets. But I think you'd be fine with possibly the 150's, or even better, I know Federal has a 125 grain load. It wouldn't be one you'd want to shoot elk with, but I think it would be fine on deer, especially if you're not talking about really long shots. Federal also has the 110 grain Barnes, now that would really be a good on to try. I wouldn't be afraid of shooting elk with that bullet, and recoil would probably be about like a 25-06.

I would go ahead and get that rifle if you can get a good deal on it. It sounds like a perfect set up with that 3-9 Leupold scope, and you won't get a rifle more accurate than the Browning A bolt.

Thanks guys.  I am thinking I would be stupid to pass up the deal.  She is a tough gal and has shot double OO out of my 12 gauge when doing her firearm safety and didnt care about the recoil.  She has shot my friends 7mm-08 and handled it well. I was thinking she would shoot 150 grain federals and I would pick up some of the 110 for shooting yotes.

Those 110 grain Barnes are going to be about $50 a box.  Kind of expensive for a coyote load.   :yike:

This will make a 30-06 recoil like a 243.
