Arrow question
« on: March 20, 2012, 01:48:27 PM »
I have a new EVO coming that will be set between 66 and 70#. My current bow shoots at 60# and I use the Easton Axis N-Fused 400's. I was talking to the archery shop owner and asked about getting the 340's for my new bow and he told me that shooting the 400's at 29 inch draw with a 100 grn broad head should not be a problem with the new bow. I asked if the new bow shooting at 70# would require the stiffer shaft as the Easton charts say and he said I will be fine with those particular arrows.

Thoughts???

Thanks in advance,
Fulla

All the 70# Evos I have shot have tuned best with a 300 spine arrow. That is at 29.5" draw
Even the 60# Evos I have tuned needed at least a 340..

Thats just one mans opinion though

How long is the arrow you are shooting?  What archery shop?

Most of the new PSE bows like a stiffer arrow.

According to my charts the 400 out of that bow at 28.25" arrow is dangerously light spined.  340 should be just right at 66#.  Even that starts getting weak at 70.

That's what I thought, every chart I looked at said tha same thing-go to the 340. My concern in using the 400 is if the arrow snaps because of to much flex. Not sure it that would or could happen but I would rather not take the chance :)

Thanks Rad for the input!

Only takes one little chip or soft spot and POW :yike:.  I've gotten lucky a few times, but I know a few not so lucky.  Not only would the 340 be safer, but it should fly one heck of a lot better too.

:yeah:

If it doesn't tune well with a 340 dont be afraid of testing a 300 out of it also. :twocents:

I agree with that for sure.  Especially if you want to go 70#.

You may be able to getaway. With 400 spine but 340 is much better and safer why chance it

Just goes to show...just because you can afford to start an archery shop doesn't mean you are overly smart.  In fact, choosing to open an archery shop might even prove your a little messed in the head :chuckle:

OK... So I ended up purchasing Easton FMJ in 340 spine. Now I just need to wait for my bow to arrive, set it up and see what happens.

The new arrows are 470 grns as apposed to my older arrows which were 400 grns. I will be shooting the new EVO at 70# so it will be interesting to see what kind of speed I get with that heavy of an arrow.

Either way it will carry some good KE :)

Thoughts?

I think you made a solid choice.  I shoot the same arrow currently. IMHO it will be far better than your former 400 spine arrows. As far as weight and speed goes im sure you will still be shooting "fast" and you will have good KE.  If anything I may have tried out a 300 spine first... to see how my bow liked it. Maybe a 300 spine with 125 heads.

Dynamic spine of the FMJ is a little softer than an all carbon 340.  Also, with the weight of that shaft you are going to want the 125 grain head.  With those two things you are going to want the EVO set closer to the 66# you mentioned rather than the 70#.

Did you order those shafts online or from a local shop?  If you find you went too light and no one will exchange the shafts let me know.  I might be able to help you out.  I'm pretty sure I have some 300's floating around here somewhere.  Not sure if they are camo or diamond plate.  Wasn't planning on getting rid of them.  But if you find yourself in a bind I will help out.
