I have two of the Cabelas LED lanterns and they work great for camping and emergency light but I think they are too heavy for the back pack crowd.

I have a couple of coleman LED lanters one has four D batteries and we use it in the camper nights to save the battery for my wifes sleep apnia machine while dry camping.  Batteries seem to last forever.  I have the same lantern with eight batterries for the main light in my hunting van and it has run since last Oct on the same batteries and thatn includes trips hunting in SD, WI, and since Feb 1 I've been camping all through the SW including a trip to the Predatormasters Hunt in NM, just put a new set of batteries in three days ago down in Death Vallley.   The four batterie light was $19.00 at Walmart and the eight battery light was $19.00 at Costco.  They both have the same light output(a lot) the four battery just stores better in the camper the eight is permenatly mounted to the wall in my van.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

I have a battery Coleman with a remote control, which is convenient for lighting up the tent in the middle of the night. Works on 4 D's
