The Bic
« on: March 30, 2012, 07:35:36 AM »
It's cheap, it's simple, it works, and does so even after being submerged in water.  It definitely deserves its own thread. :chuckle:

Is someone playing super mario in the background?  One of the underground levels?

I would use my snow peak stove as a back-up if need be.  Press the ignitor and it starts.

Nope.  :chuckle:

There's nothing wrong with carrying extra.  I just choose not to most of the time.

This video was in response to the  "Bic lighters fail" argument in another thread, which always heads down the path of "what if it gets wet?".  I just wanted to show folks that when a bic lighter gets wet, it can still work.

I carry two bics(one of the few things I have redundant in my gear).   One in my pack and one in my pocket.   I have had one fail.  I think the jet got plugged with lint (from my pocket)that I couldn't get out.

They're also good for checking wind direction.

Thanks Miles.  I am vindicated.  I don't even take the metal part off.  Just a couple long runs on the pants or my arm and it will light.  I also carry 2, generally the smaller ones.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

I agree with the bic. And when backpacking, extra space is rare. Why else would I cut labels of my tent, and shorten my tooth brush. That being said. I don't pack multiple fire starters. The bic works.  8)
