need advice for salmon shark/butt rod

i am going to be spending the summer in southeast working on a salmon tender and i was told that there is a good ammount of downtime here and there, so i was told to bring my sport fishing gear. i dont think i could live with myself if i went to alaska and didnt fish like a mad man whenever possible...

im going to be bringing 2 rods, one shimano convergence with a 6500 garcia w/ 50lbs test braid for salmon, rockfish, small to medium fish....

but... i need some suggestions for a big-game rod for big butts and salmon sharks and whatever else...

i just saw the new shimano trevalas at the tackleshop, 7 footer, rated at 65-200lbs braid, super sensitive, and not a telephone pole like most of the big game rods we have for sale around here, it looked like a rod that could pick up the pace once my garcia/convergence is outclassed...

but.... from what ive read about salmon sharks, they are very similar to fishing marlin, so...

the reel i am thinkin of is a 6/0 penn senator with 1100 some yards of 100lbs braid... seems like a pretty bulletproof and proven reel... but, i know there are better reels out there, and its a star/carbon washer drag system, and ive heard those can burn up on a big fish... maybe ill get some extra drag washers? better to have it and not need it....

i like the trevala becuase its sensitive enough to fish smaller stuff, but, seems tough enough for big fish....

im considering splurging on this setup... what would you guys reccomend?

forgot to mention, im going to be in the middle of nowhere, so getting parts for a reel is going to be pretty hard, and, i doubt there will be anywhere to get a new rod if incase something happens
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.

the best way to catch big butts is to use a logging cable with a twinkie at the end of the cable, after that you just have to pick the walmart
of your choice :chuckle:

I like to use the penn 5 1/2' tuna stick with a penn 330 or 340 w/braided line.

Hello Jeepster,
You might need a 1 piece frame if you load a senator with braid?  I have 4 old 6/0 senators that I have caught many mako and thresher sharks up to 340 pounds on and they all have either accurate or tiburon frames and are very tough old reels. As for a sweet rod that is relatively cheap bass pro sells a offshore extreme live bait rod in 20-50 or 30-60 that is pretty nice and virtually unbreakeable. It is a 7 foot rod with gimballed butt and sells for about 130 I think.
Good fishin,
Mike

well.... i sold my boat today, so, on the way to my bank with several thousand dollars in my pocket........ it was damned near impossible to not go to the tackle shop..... i cracked....

i bought a Shimano Trevala 6 1/2 footer rated for 80-200lbs braid, and an Avet LX lever drag 4.6:1 with 490 yards of 85lbs powerpro braid

the drag systems on avet reels are just incredible...and those trevala rods are nuts... ive never seen a rod rated for such heavy use that is as small of a diameter and sensitive as these travalas... kinda bummed i gotta wait a few weeks untill i get to try it out
