Colville late season?
« on: April 18, 2012, 08:37:17 AM »
Hi guys I'm newer to the thread but not new too hunting. I have been hunting the tucannon, Dayton area for eight years with my family. But, this year it will just be me. I'm headed over next week for five days. My dad won't be able to make it on this trip due to a big job ending in a couple weeks. I would like to try taking him over to the colville area in mid may. My question: are the birds still on public land that late in the season and would it be worth going into a new area we haven't been before? Or is it real difficult to get on birds? Thanks, any info would be great. :)

Birds will still be on public land, but will be overcalled, buped repeatedly, and extremely wary.  Call soft and sparingly.   The good news is that the hens will all be bread and going to the nest. He will be lonely especially between 9am and 4pm, but are harvestable all day long.  Since you are a hunter, you know your chances always greatly increase with any game with scouting ... locating where they roost, go to feed and breed, their strut zones, etc.  You may end up spending a lot of hunting time just locating birds, but it isn't always about the harvest ... go anyway as it will help you later on.

I shot one the second to last day of the season a few years ago over there.  I hadn't hunted the area for about five years, pulled in, after driving from the westside, about a half hour before hunting time, owl called and had three responses, one from below me and two from a couple hundred yards above me.  Ended up getting one of the two jakes when he flew down from hist roost.

Good luck.
