Is this a decent book?
« on: May 01, 2012, 05:42:35 AM »
I found a book on craigslist called "best way to train your gun dog" the delmar smith method, for 5 bucks. Is this a good book? If not could someone give suggest a book to help train my pup for pointing and retrieving? I've been working on her with pointing but she will not point a bird for the life of her, but odd smells she finds around the field she points all day.

Game dog by Richard Wolters is an excellent book.  They are out in DVD as well.  A very good do it yourself book.

Go get a copy of " Training Pointing Dogs" by Paul Long.  It is the only book you'll ever need.  It is a question and answer paperback.  It will help you work through the problems you might encounter.

If you want to train for both pointing and retrieving this book may pertain to you, The Pointing Labrador by Julie Knutson.  I am reading it right now in preperation for my new pup in August!! Good luck

For that price i would read it just to get another view on trainging. I have read some older books on training and have found some neat ideas to help the training along... Each writer might have some different kinds of drills to run...

Delmar Smith would actually be a dog trainer by profession.................... Richard Wolters was a literary writer.......................... take your own opinion on what would be more usefull, Paul Long was a dog trainer long before the invent of anything electronic in dog training,as bluemoon suggests a good book, Robert Wehle a marketeer of Elhew pointers has a book that is very informational called "Wing and Shot",his training buddy was a guy named Earl Crangle and he has a book as well. Buy wolters book to keep you warm by the fire as you peruse the pages of the others IMO.

For $5 buy it. I have a huge pile of this and that books. I've read bits and pieces of. Stuff ranging from "No Bad dogs", "Tracking essentials", "Charlie Morgan" to Mike Lardy's stuff. If you can find a tid-bit of information and knowledge to learn something that helps you and your dog, why not know it?

John and Amy Dahl are active retriever trainers who are successful today. Good read.

Good book.  I found the Delmar book a bit harder to read and follow than the Wolters book.  But, I thought the Delmar book had a lot more information and ended up being the better book.  For $5.00 I'd definately add it to the library.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
