Any mechanics out there?

Got a question and an outboard problem, narrowing it down as most dealers do not have appointment till 14 May...  Auuugh!  Anyhow the problem is this 200HP Honda outboard 2007 model.  Turns on quick and fine, powers up fine, runs fine and tops off fine, had recently started expericance shut down upon powering down to stop.  The motor alarm goes steady and engine shuts off.  A turn of the key and it fires right back up and runs fine till I go to stop again or slow down, but almost nothing on powering up?  Any thoughts?

I had that problem on my 07 Honda. Then it started to cough and sputter on power up also. Ended up having to rebuild my carburetor's. Bad gas destroyed them. That pesky ethanol. Good luck Mike.

check the oil level in the motor/ makes sure if its a 2 stroke it has mix oil in the reservoir if its a self mixer. being low will cause the alarm to come on and dont get mad im just gonna give you the basics of my knowledge of things that make the alarm go off. im not assuming your dumb. check and make sure the motor is pissing water(not just a trickle. should be a good heavy stream) otherwise it will shut down if its overheating with alarm going off. some motors have a water separator and if it has to much water in it it will sound the alarm and cause shutdown. faulty charging system  can cause alarm depending on motor. and fuel injection problems can cause alarms depending on your motor. hope that helps!

years ago while working at a resort a man showed up with a brand new out board, had a simular problem.
was so pissed he sold the motor to my coworker for $20 bucks. he brought it to me & we ran it & found that a piece of rubber from when the lines were ran found its way into the carb bowls. floated around till it shut it off. settled & would restart &  run fine then die when that little piece would find its way to a port.
 check your bowls ??

If I'm understanding correctly here and the motor stalls when you back off the throttle and sounds an alarm, I would guess the motor runs very lean when you back off for some reason. If you were really low on oil it might do the same thing, tripping the safety alarm and shutting the motor down.

Is your motor fuel injected?

We had the "Exact" same thing on a 115 outboard. Check all your wires. You may be grounding out..Look your motor over REAL good, then chck it again. Ours was on the starter cable. Just a little ware spot that we over looked for 3 days, until I got shocked..FOUND IT..

It is a four stroke, fuel injected 200hp.  I drained the gas today fuel separators too.  Put in 20 gallons of fresh stuff, baked into the lake, ran it for 20 minutes, but could not launch.  Will launch in the am and piss off the neighbors doing laps on the lake to see if it does it.  ruling one thing at a time to see what it could be..  Oil good to go on levels...

Sounds wierd but I've seen it...did you recently change the engine oil?  Buddies boat needed to be 1/2 to 3/4 quart low.  Boat did everything you are saying yours does.  The oil gets hot and froths up while running, then when you come off power it triggers the low pressure alarm and kills the motor.  Google it, it's pretty common.

Without knowing the specifics of these motors I would probably be testing the TPS and the MAP sensor, I would be leaning towards the MAP sensor having carbon build-up on the vacuum side. If that is greek to you I doubt I am any help to you, if you have a book that identifies the parts and sensors etc, you could locate and remove the MAP sensor to make sure the vacuum source is clear. Use an analog meter to sweep the TPS, again if this is greek to you...

Yep FC - Greek to me for sure...  Appreciate the assistance though, but the world of mechanics is not mine...  I unfortunately will have to spend dollars and have someone else check those sensors if the fuel wasn't the problem.  Hopefully a simple check with the computer HDS system that the dealer has will identify the problem, again if it is not fuel related...  Auugh...  Fun times or what?

unfortunatley you need to have a computer module to figure out these modern engines... you need a module so "the engine can tell YOU" what the problem is....

hard to beat the fuel economy, and "reliability" and the alure of a new engine, but there is a reason why i love carbs...

id rather have an engine with carbs, and points vs EFI and whatnot.... if you are in the middle of nowhere and your engine acts up, with an oldskool engine, you 95% of the time just need to put on a new coil, rotor, cap, fuel filter and carb...  if you have 2 carbs, tune one the way your engine likes, take it off, tune the other the same, and run that... if any of those act up, its a 5 minute fix vs the entire engine shutting down and having to tow in, or use the kicker to get home

I couldn't get it to duplicate, but again Lake is restricted till 2:00pm for faster than fast idle...  Tried to get it hot enough, but maybe fuel was the problem.  I did go ahead and drop it off with a dealer that had the HDS system just a few minutes ago.  They'll will run it and see via the computer..  Just want to make certain as the big water is not the place to lose an engine for sure...

Your right, never want to lose an engine especially on the ocean blue, that's never fun !! Hopefully the dealer can give you a definitive answer instead of "well it could be this or could be that" thats what I am dealing with my motor, I think we got it figured out now but like $1500 later

Well - got a call from Tech, seems as if all checks out on HDS system, they couldn't reduplicate the problem either.  Were going to run it tomorrow on American Lake to see if it does it.  Not O2 sensor or anything electronic as of right now.  Could be thermostat or one that is going bad anyhow.  Hoping the fuel was the issue, crossed fingers and toes...

oh and just as a heads up for you most of that information i got from the honda marine web site. they have a manuals section and it basically with a little reading gives you all the possible reasons the alarm can go off!

I learned I need a new water pump but thats an easy fix !!
