Whitetail invasion
« on: August 04, 2008, 07:04:21 PM »
What's the furthest west you've seen a whitetail deer??  Years ago I saw a huge whitetail doe about 10 miles north of Winthrop.  That's the biggest doe I've ever seen, and one of the biggest deer I've ever seen, buck or doeThat was probably the late nineties.  How about you guys.  What's your story?

Ilwaco.  On the East side the farthest West was Teanaway.

I've saw a 4 pt right after dark in the Tanum area about 20 years ago.

The WT that you saw in Illwaco was a Columbian WT. Not the same as the eastside WT

I'm aware of that it was a Columbian, he didnt specify so I threw in the East side spotting as well.  We saw over a dozen at the upper Teanaway Valley, but it was over 20 years ago.

Wow, I haven't seen any in there but it wouldn't surprise me. I had to do a double take when I saw the 4 pt in the Tanum (sp) area 20 yrs ago. They were not know to be there at that time

Yeah, I meant eastern whitetail.  You know...6, 8, 10, 16, 22 pointers....  :chuckle:

Interesting in that all the sightings so far, are relatively old.  Mine included.  I wonder if the WDFW have been doing something to prevent the western expansion of the whitetail range in Washington.  Far fetched, I know, to expect them to do anything useful, but I wonder...

Saw on another thread that they're in the Chiwawa...that's as far west as I've heard.  I spend a lot of time there and have a cam up, but haven't seen any whities there myself.

Slight tangent...last week I saw a large framed photo of a whitie doe titled "Lopez Deer" in an art gallery on Lopez Island.  They wanted a bunch of $$ for it.  Pretty sure that pic wasn't from Lopez!

I have seen them all the way up just West of Mazama. Also, a few years ago, we spotted a small whitetail buck several times during the season up by Banker Pass north of Mazama.

6, 8, 10, 22 pointers, what are we on the East coast now?   ;)  We talked to a couple of ranchers at Teanaway who were determined to kill off all the whitetails in the area.  They were afraid that they would mess up the mulie gene pool.

On the Wetside, I have seen them on several occasions around Kanaskat-Palmer.  Will see if I can find the photos.  Have not been in the area in about 8 years, so they are somewhat old.

What? Are you kidding me?  Wow, Lets see the pics if you have some, I'd be real interested on where they came from.

Nope, not kidding.  Was bear hunting and they walked into my stand.  I could not believe it myself.  They winded me and up went the white flags and they bolted off.  Next week, the were feeding in a cut and I stalked up and snapped some pics with a disposable 35mm camera.  They flagged me then as well and I got some shots of them from about 50 yards as they trotted up the cut away from me.
Local warden did not believe me until I gave him copies of the pictures and showed him the area.  Never heard anything back from him after that, so do not know what came of it.
Pictures are in a box somewhere.  I will try to see if I can find them.  8 years is a long time to try and find a needle in a haystack in my storage!
