Coyote calling.... got eagles?
« on: May 11, 2012, 10:10:13 PM »
It was the first 'nice' day in a very looong time.... and it was the weekend, so I grabbed my 223 and some Nosler partition bullets and hit the road. I found some great areas that would be (I thought) a good place to call. Anyway, not being real serious about it, just getting out of the house and out and about was absolutely refreshing.

So anyway I found this one hill/ridge a while ago, (about 100 foot up) where on one end was a older clearcut you could see as far as 500 yards at max but average about 200. Still is very brushy but better than thick woods. Anyway, I get on top the hill coming from the east and find the wind in my face, so I sit down and start calling this cottontail Primos caller.

So I was just calling and I am sure I started pretty rough but after about 40 minutes or so, I felt I was getting better at making just the right sounds that I wanted. About that time I was getting a little bored with the area. I was figuring either A: I was calling wrong or B: Nothing was in the area. Being new I am more prone to go to A but B is a strong possibility as well. So anyway I stand up and start heading a little west, to get a better view of the other side of the clearcut. I hadn't even started walking before some movement caught my eye. 2 Deer out a ways, (guess about 100 yardsish) no horns (not sure if they would this time of year or not either)

So now I put away my rifle and bring out my camera and start wildly taking pictures getting real excited that I'm seeing wildlife after near 40 minutes of inactivity. Deer no less... (though thinking back I could have probably walked a bit more before calling and would have seen them (maybe?) beaded down in the area. Its very brushy, and I was probably looking at them the entire time but never could see them. Its really hard to see them, even in the picture.

So anyway I moved a few yards over to overlook that area and actually found a better (viable) area to run off of. So I sit down and start calling again.

About this time I call for about 10 minutes and was still thinking about the deer then I hear this bird call what sounded behind me. I look back and then up and see... about 5 eagles circling overhead.  :)

I have seen eagles before, some where real big too, but I have never seen more than 2 at a time. It was incredible and I thought that my calling cannot be too bad if it makes eagles think about lunch.  :)

This is the best picture of them, but I have a movie clip too that shows them circling and calling better. yes I know blurry.... fuzzy... low zoom..... cheap cameras...

I watched 5 eagles hunt mice today while raking silage.  It was very intertaining.  2 adults and 3 immature ones.  They were not afraid of the rake at all.  Saw them within 20ys or less catch, kill and fly away with mice.

You should see what they do when they get fooled by your calls and a rabbit decoy. Their screams are ear splitting at about 40 yards.
the head has been lopped of the eagle.our country has become a nation of losers, them that feed on the teet and can do no more than suckle from them that toil. ~ Rasbo

:yeah: I have called in hawks, owls, eagles, and even deer while calling.  The redtail hawks have swiped my western rivers rabbit decoy more than once.  Luckily they let go if it shortly after they hit it.

I had a friend get his stocking cap knocked off his head by a Red Tailed Hawk. It came from behind, he didn't see it coming. Traumatized him good, for about a month after that, you could blow on a call down town and he would start looking over his should. No joke! :o
