Retort Pouches - Anybody use them?
« on: May 29, 2012, 01:20:28 PM »
Hi all,

I am looking into buying a new vacuum sealer and am looking at a chamber type.  I saw something I never heard of before in the specs for these machines.  Some have dual sealing bars for use with something called "retort pouches".  These machines are typically $300-$400 more than a single bar model not compatible with the pouches.  I did a little research on them and you basically use them to pressure can right in the pouch without jars.  It is basically like making your own MRE sealed pouches.  Anybody ever use these?  If so, how reliable are they and how long do you have to pressure cook them?

Thats pretty awesome, never knew about that process before I always wondered how they kept smoked salmon out in vacuum sealed bags, thats pretty cool I'm gonna have to start doing that, it would be a lot better for all sorts of canning thanks for posting this.

You will be much happier with a chamber sealer if you do a lot of vacuum sealing especially with fish.

My very thoughts.  This would be a great way to do razor clams too.

If one of the mods sees this, can you move this back to the recipes/butchering section?
