Moose Tag in Selkirk
« on: June 09, 2012, 07:25:14 PM »
I just drew a moose tag in the Selkirk unit.  I am wondering if anyone would be willing to share any information they could.  I am super excited to get up there and start scouting.  Any suggestions much appreciated.

Are you looking for a DIY hunt or are you considering hiring a guide?

I drew the Selkirk tag last year.  Saw lots of Moose.  Super fun hunt with any time input you'll have a bull.  The down side is they have Moose over there with tape worm cysts.  Be sure to have your deer tag handy we saw some nice big bicks as well as Moose and lots of turkeys.  The early season is awesome, they rut around  the 10th of Oct.  learn the calls, my 12 year old called a bull in after we shot mine (and were waiting the 45 minutes to procede) to within 15 yards and he would not leave.  We actually threw rocks that hit him with no results, he did not leave.  It was a little scary for a while.  They are not like deer or elk, not really scared of people.  They are big, so dont only shoot them from the road, shoot them on the road (old logging road).  The rear 1/4s were 100lbs ea. and the fronts were 68.  Much bigger than elk.  Hope you have some good hunting buddies. Good luck.  Pm me for details.

Thanks so much for the input.  I would love to get a litttle more detailed information on where to even start in that unit.  Is there a time when I could contact you?  Thanks again

It is that time of year ya know.  :chuckle:

My advise is to scout. You know where the unit is. The sooner you start the better. Take a GPS and mark locations. 4 or 5 year old clearcuts would be a good start.
Just one more day

I was drawn for the Selkirk a few years ago. My advice would be to hunt the opening week before deer season, I couldn't because of an injury. When I got over there the next week deer season was on with lots of hunters, they were all seeing moose, I was seeing deer hunters. It took me two trips over to fill my tag. If you want more info send me a PM

The way I see it is the moose tag is a once in a lifetime tag. If there is good info for the guy just send him a PM to not spoil the spots to everyone. If it were me, I would get on the phone with the local biologist. They fly in helicopters and do moose counts. They have some good info at times to at least get you started.

I've spent a lot of time in the unit.  Have a family cabin in Newport so I am up there often.  I live in the tri-cities and would be willing to show you on some maps some areas to go and look.  I have spotted tons of Moose up there and have one spot that I consistantly see moose.  Had a good bull walk in on me elk hunting.  If you get a GMU map for that area, I can mark some things down for you, or if you plan a trip up there this summer and its one of the weekends I am in Newport, I would be glad to drive you around and show you things.

Selkirk is the tag to have! There are some great bulls in that unit. I have several friends that have shot big bulls in Selkirk. That's the unit I have been gunning for. Good luck! It's not a matter of if you get a bull, it's a matter of which bull you take!
