Looking for some help (hopefully I'll get it...)
« on: August 17, 2008, 12:37:00 PM »
Hey all,

So next year I'm going to the UW and have class every day.  Usually I hunt the Eastern side of the state but now I probably wont have time to get out there.  I'm trying to find a few places to scout that are relatively close to Seattle that I could do some weekend trips or something.  I have a bit of summer left so I have plenty of time to scout.  Any pointers or advice in the right direction would be helpful, thanks.

Eastern Lewis County, Cowlitz drainage from Mossyrock to White Pass.  Take 7 south to junction at Morton, from there you'll find good places to scout in nearly every direction.  Look for good spots where you can glass cuts that can't be seen from a truck EVEN IF THEY HAVE A KEY TO THE GATE.  Assume some hunter will have a key to every locked gate out there  >:(, and expect them to drive in during the season.

That fits my definition of relatively close, might be too far ...
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

You are not that far from, deer hunting the Teanaway, duck hunting the Skagit/Snohomish drainages or pheasant hunting a release site (look them up on the web).  Ask around campus, you'll be surprised at how many enjoy hunting and fishing.

What type of hunting do you have in mind? Here are a few thoughts on elk/deer areas.

Cle Elum is exactly 1.5 hours from Seattle and that will put you right in the middle of hunting that you are probably familiar with.

Olympia area (and to the west) is 1.0-1.5 hours from Seattle. This will put you into blacktail country.

Kelso/Longview area is 2.5 hours from Seattle. This will put you into elk country.

Haham my brother goes to WSU, I dont think I could give him the satisfaction of transfering.

Sorry for not replying earlier, I've been pretty busy.

Thanks for all the info.

I have a buddy at CWU so I might try the Teanaway and what not.  I selected Western WA elk though so I'll figure that out.

Thanks again
