How much is a used commercial crab pot worth?
« on: July 21, 2013, 02:38:42 PM »
How much is a used commercial crab pot worth? I found a big old but in good used stainless steel 4 door pot yesterday out fishing. My down rigger snagged it in 200 ft of water. No names or tags on her so I salvaged it. The pot is to heavy to hand pull but if a guy had a puller it would be a bad as$ crab pot.

Depends on size and type.  They can go anywhere from a couple hundred on up to a couple thousand. If it is a typical pot used by the tribes in the Sound, in good shape several hundred.

sounds like just a stainless pot, a true commercial pot is around 1,000 lbs that no DR is gonna lift up! but still a freebie is a score  :IBCOOL:

A commercial pot for dungies in the the sound most likely doesn't way more than 100 lbs, one for the coast may go as high as 150lbs. I'm sure you can buy them new for under 200 bucks. I hand pull my commercial pots, no deeper than 50' though. They weigh about 50-70lbs.

You can buy used commie pots for less than $100 bucks...cut the heavy bars out of the bottom, repair any wiring and let her soak.  I love used commie pots, a good 24 hour soak and you can limit a boat of 4 dudes with two pots and still throw some legals back!

I hauled one of those up while shrimping in Discovery Bay a few years ago. They sure are heavy! I wouldn't want to hand pull one of those. I sold that one for $75 at a garage sale. It wasn't in great shape bit still usable.

I've bought them for 50 to 100 apiece. They are great for deep water, late summer fishing when you are looking for crab. Remember how much it cost to rig them, lead line, bait canisters etc. That's usually another 50

Nice find, that's a good looking pot. Definitely the puget sound style commercial pot, the bigger ocean ones are nowhere near 1,000lbs... Unless you're talking king crab :chuckle: but they are more heavy duty than that. I think just the mesh is stainless too not the frame and all like that one appears to be. I pulled up a regular old danielson pot with the rigger once. She was grunting pretty good!

I've got one at the end of my driveway I've tried to give away for the last two years... pulled it up while shrimping with no info on it.  Even the local commercial crabbers don't seem to want it.   :dunno:

I was thinking of cutting out the steel and rolling up some 3/8 SS rod then making the pot a little smaller and lighter.
