rimrock hunt cow hunt finally turned around!
« on: November 04, 2013, 04:29:16 PM »
well it was definently a rough 5 days. we hunted daylight to nightfall all 5 daays with 6 cow tags to fill! we ended up only filling 3 one on friday and 2 sunday night.. this was my first elk! and being excited is an understatement. we hadnt seen much elk all week an elk here and there but we could only hear them crashing through the timber, by the time we caught a glimpse of them they were long gone headed up and over or just plain down the draw over to cowiche by then!  :bash: my dad was lucky enough to be driving back to camp just before daylight and caught a small heard crossing the road not a mile from camp, got out walked a 100 or so yards over the hills edge and got a shot so 1 cow tag filled. saturday didnt even see an ellk all day! so sunday i knew it was time to push through the sore legs and tired body and find the elk! hunted all morning nothing!  :dunno: all afternoon and finally caught a glimpse of 3 or 4 cows climbing there way up the hill through the timber i just happed to catch them in an open patch for a few seconds but not long enough for a decent shot, so up the hill i went quickly but trying to be quite. but never caught up to them  :bash: so evening came around and i was just ready to give up, ii had one more spopt i wanted to try, as soon as i pulled up to the hillside i wanted to make my last hike through all i saw were break lights in front of me! i take a quick peek up the hill and theres 15 or more cows running up the hill me and my partner get out of the rig and make it to the base of the hill, she had never shot anythiung before this was her first real time hunting so i told her take her time check and make sure there cows! and i gave her the first shot! then boom! one small cow drops to the ground (but hey an elk is an elk especially being her first) i keep my eye on the cows the whole time as soon as she shot the heard split of course! and up the hill they go, now booking it! so i put on the running shoes  ;) and up after them i went! with maybe 10 minutes of good shooting light left and the season about as close to an end as it could get. i make it about 3/4 of the way up and just in time theres 2 cows just about to go up and over, i pull up find her in my scope and pull the trigger! i was almost posotive she dropped! i make my way up to where i shot at her and it was now dark. took out the flashlight make a few loops and zig zags no cow  :bash: turn around and 10 feet down the hill there she lay! i was more than excited the miles put in and all the effort payed off! rimrock was alot harder of a unit to hunt then i was expecting but it payed off in the end!  :IBCOOL: a long write up for a cow i know but i was pretty damn excited! thank for reading and hopefully enjoy

Nice job.  Rimrock has some great country, but it is not easy hunting by any means.

Wow three whole elk. Awesome. Been awhile since I have seen a whole elk hanging, usually quarters in bags.  Way to go.
