Day trip in Central Oregon
« on: December 07, 2008, 01:05:31 PM »
Went down to see my momma over the long weekend, I love Central Oregon, especially the Muledeer hunting, but the heards are in trouble and it is harder and harder to fill a tag.
Thurs. my stepdad and I took a road trip out China hat rd. past Pine mnt. out to the desert, saw 20 deer, and 2 real good bucks that were chasing and hearding them around, they were to quick for me to get a pic, but both were quality bucks.
Right before we saw the bucks we came down the dirt road(trail!) and someone had set a trap in the intersection of 3 roads and it had a real nice coyote in it. Now I am not opposed to trapping and I have even hunted coyotes in the past, but this poor dog just looked sad! My step dad had a little 5 shot .22 that folds up and you carry it on your belt like a knife, well that thing is not accurate and he missed the dog all 5 times, and no more shells, so there it sat as we drove off, I hope that trapper comes and gets it soon.
As we left the dog behind we couldn't help but wonder how many deer and antelope fawns that trap has saved over the years, definately needs to be more of then down there thats for sure.

Man that makes me miss trapping, you did the correct thing by leaving the dog alone. Varmint control needs to be done, trapping is very effective. I personally like the pics but I don't like posting pics like that, give the anti fanatics fuel. Sounds like a fun trip.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

That was one thing that came to mind Teach! But I posted anyway, Central Oregon is rampant with these things, and more needs to be done to balance the scales.

Just something to keep in mind, if you had killed the coyote in the trap you could have been cited.  It is illegal to mess with a trapper's set and or catch.  Me personally if you'd have shot him and left him I would have been grateful, but some guys do not like additional holes in their pelts.  Fox and yotes can be dispatched without putting holes in their hides.  I'm a little perplexed on how you missed a trapped animal.  You can walk right up to them and shoot them from just a couple of feet away.

P.S.  The trapper did a nice job with an excellent catch high up on the leg.  Means his set was set up correctly.  Yotes can be tough to catch with a leghold if you don't know what your doing, this guys obviously does.

Ya I don't know how he missed either! :dunno: I stood in front of the dog so it faced me and he walked around till it was broadside, he tried to get as close as possible. I told him it looked like he was shooting high but to no avail.
One of those situations where you do what seems right at the moment, it seemed the right thing to do to put the dog down. I don't like seeing any animal suffering, even vermin.
