Arrow length?
« on: September 13, 2014, 09:50:00 PM »
So i have a 29 in draw length and my arrows are cut at 30 is that about the norm? I had a buddy tell me he cut his arrows to 26 with a 27in draw and it improved his accuracy. i don't get it so I'm lookin for some other input? :dunno:

I guess I'm not sure exactly how draw length translates to arrow length but I can tell you that I also have a 29" draw length (which my bow is set to) and yet my arrows are 27" long (from the bottom of the nock "dip" to the insert).  30" arrows, if you're using the same measurement as I am, sounds too long.  My understanding is that you want your field points/broadheads to to barely clear your rest for the sake of accuracy.

Yeah that's kinda what he was saying, I mean I was accurate this season with two great shots and 2 animals down but if this makes me even more accurate ill be happy. I'm gonna have them cut one to 28 and 1 cut at 27 to see what I'm more accurate with! thanks for your input!

Unless someone else has a better recommendation I would suggest drawing back with an arrow and having someone mark the arrow 1/4" beyond the end of your rest, and cut them to that length.  But be patient and wait for more input before you do anything. :twocents:

It mostly has to do with the spine when talking about lengths. I for one like to have my arrow stick past my riser so if something were to go wrong I wouldn't cut my finger off with a broadhead

I am also a guy that cuts his arrows to be even with the end of his riser or just beyond for the same reason as bownarrow. If your arrow falls of that rest and you have them cut as short as your buddy or what band is saying that broadhead is right on your hand. I don't like that to much and have had that happen while practicing with broadheads. I would consult an arrow chart as far as cutting them shorter will make for a stiffer spine to make sure if you do go shorter the spine still works for your setup. I believe easton arrow chart has a +/- of 1/2 inch on their charts.

I would not base arrow length soley off your draw length -x".  You need to cut arrows to what the bow tells you to cut them at.  Different brace heights, riser designs and rests will require different arrow lengths.

You need to get with someone that is familiar with it and probably get your bow at full draw and look at how the arrow/broadhead sets with the riser.  Then mark the arrow, let down and cut.  Make sure to do it with the broadhead so you account for riser clearance.

Ive always cut my arrows to sit just passed the riser. Spine, foc, weight are all things to look at when setting up arrows. If you are shooting with out a problem I dont see knocking off a couple inches off you arrow doing anying but requiring you to retune and maybe spine being to stiff causing bad broadhead flight. I shoot a 31" arrow out of a 30 1/2" draw and have placed 32" arrows In the same hole (32" for my turkey heads) but I have to adjust the foc.
