winchesters shells wont eject out of my semi auto shotgun
« on: October 30, 2014, 12:27:15 PM »
Went out hunting today and loaded my gun with Winchester 3 1/2 #2's that I bought yesterday, when I went to empty the gun I could not get the bolt on the shotgun to cycle so I took the barrel off and had to use a small pipe to ram the shell out of the barrel. I put a federal shell in and it cycled just fine so I tried the Winchester again and it would not come out again.

I tried calling Winchester customer service but I had to leave a message. Looks like I might be sticking to federals in the future.

Was it the first shell that hung up? Could have been a squib. You can measure the case head to see if it's a sizing issue.

It was a non fired shell, I checked others from the same box and they do the same. If I use any other brand it works just fine.

I received a call from Winchester and they are having me ship them the shells and they will send me a refund when they receive the shells.

I won't shoot winchester shells. I have had more problems with them than any other brand. Never had a whole box do that but have had a few out of a box not eject and it sure makes you mad when a big group comes in and all you have is a single shot.  :bash:

I usually buy a couple cases of federal shotgun shells before waterfowl season but bought a couple boxes of Winchester in a last minute need.

Tolerance is off on the shell possibly.  Was your chamber free of build up?
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

The only Winchester's that have worked for me is the blindside, I've had issues with the regular Winchesters. I got a refund on two flats of Super Target shells this year when I had one bad round per box, the shell base was jammed into the plastic. I have also had problems with Black-cloud not feeding and had two that were so over crimped all the shot fell out. I stick with Kent Fast Steel, Remington and standard Federal's. Or most of the time my hand loads, this weekend I'll be shooting my 10 ga with hand loads of #4 steel.  :twocents:

it appeared clear of build up but I'm going to scrub it with a brass brush and see if it changes anything.

Buy a case of # 2 kent shells. I think you will be very happy with them.

Might be that your ejector is getting worn.  Shotshells don't have much of a rim anyway.... :dunno:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

the ejector works just fine, Its a semi auto and the bolt will not cycle no matter how hard I pull on it.

So when you pull the "bolt", it won't open up?  Weird!  I'd be curious to see if it cycled after firing.

it won't open at all when I pull on the bolt, I had to take the barrel off and use a cleaning rod to push it out. I'm thinking that the brass wass not resized within specs.

Yep, sounds like an out-of-spec shell.  Most shotshells these days have a brass plated steel case head.  Not as forgiving as the old brass, but a lot less expensive.  could also have been a bulged case... I do know that Winchester 22 LR ammo is the only ammo my Walther P-22 doesn't like!  That new 17 WSM would probably be a success if someone besides Winchester makes the ammo, and Savage gets their act together and builds a decent rifle for it....
