New sight for the new optima
« on: October 04, 2015, 06:28:18 PM »
Wanted to give a shout out to a sponsor. Muzzle-loaders.com

I picked up a ace in the hole Williams sight from them. Got it fast and am very happy with it and looking forward to testing it out. Link below for anyone else looking for a replacement for the factory fight.

nice looking sight you got there wanted to know more about it.  Have you shot much in the early hrs or evening when light is an issue I've had problems with peeps in low light conditions.  Another question I also have the optima V2 NW and have had problems with musket caps going off.  about 1 in every 10-15 caps will take a strike and not fire, second strike they always fire.  I'm using the recommended RWS caps its not an issue with hang fires or anything like that the cap just doesn't go off.  Have you experienced any issues like that with yours?

Hey Kyle,

Contact CVA if you're having issues with musket caps igniting. They have just released a new breech plug that will solve your issue.

Carp.  I'm very curious to see what you think about this site.  Also, does the peep on the rail mount with the typical dovetail Williams uses, so one could swap it out for their ghost ring?

Yes it mounts just like the normal Williams. So I see no reason you could not switch them out. I like it because it does get a peep closer to your eye. Like your thoughts more accurate with a longer sight radius. The peep that comes with it has a nice sized opening not to big or to small. However like most of the Williams I have run in low light the smaller diameter peeps can make shooting in lower light a pain. I really like it so far and it seems rock solid!!!

I know some people that had problems with the caps not going off. They were not seating them properly afraid they would go off while seating. Give them a good push with the thumb. Just a thought.

I think everyone had this issue and my rifle is useless as it won't ignite consistantly at all.  1-5 won't pop.  Cva said its not a problem they are aware of and I laughed at the guy.  Just a quick search online reveled how much of a problem it was even two months after the guns were released.   :chuckle:  is there a link to any admission of the plug being faulty?  Or a link to the new plug that actually works?  I have a wolf. I can't find anything on cva that says new breech plug / specifying that it is fixing the problem?

thanks for all the replies :).  I have tried giving them a real good push onto the plug that doesn't solve my issue.  Like I stated I'm really only having this problem occur totally at random.  My brother is a machinist so I'm going to have him make firing pin with a slightly raised outer edge.  I know that't probably not the recommended course of action, but I'd be willing to bet that it will fix the issue.  Having a totally flat surface and such a large firing pin is spreading out the pressure on the cap, where I believe it needs a more sharp bite to reliably ignite.  I will post the results of said firing pin replacement when the part is finished and in the gun.

Oh one more thing I thought I'd share about my experience with the Optima V2.  I recently put on my Harris bi pod which as most of you will already know it attaches to the front sling mount.  I did have some thoughts prior to doing so thinking that being plastic it probably would break off.  Sure enough about 5 shots at the range and it broke right off.    :bash:   FFS CVA common I mean I really if i could have got a laminated wood stock I would have paid another $100 for the gun.  Its a sweet little piece and I really like the thing but its hard for me to keep that attitude with all the issues it has.  Anyways I bought a good steel swivel post and drilled out a place for it since then bi pod has stayed attached.  One more thing I'll add is that I originally bought a Traditions Vortek LDR NW and it is probably the most competitive gun out there for Optima V2 NW.  I personally felt that the Vortek was a total piece of junk I didn't like the ceracoat finish, it was wildly inaccurate, and it had even worse problem of not firing the musket caps on the first hit.  So in conclusion these companies need to really focus and test these NW legal guns, because a gun meant to shoot 209's needs more than just a different breech plug to shoot musket caps reliably.  Sorry to ruin the thread with non sight related posts :(

Well from what I have read on this site, CVA stated that the nipples were made to soft and will send a replacement of a harder metal.

I have yet to read that.  Until now.  The nipple was dented from the hammer too.  Hmmm.

plastic molded in sling swivel and one puts a bipod on it? Come on now!   :chuckle:

I drilled an extra hole and used a steel swivel on my wolf.

I'm kinda surprised to hear about all the firing issues with the Optima V2.  I had issues with mine last year using pyrodex pellets & CCI caps (missed out on a big buck after 2 misfires, barely got my smaller buck after a hangfire).  This year I switched to 777 loose powder and RWS caps and haven't had one cap not fire, even during rainy conditions.  I always clean my barrel/breech plug after every 5 shots or so, and use a nipple pick to make sure there's no fouling.

But to get back on topic, I'm very interested in this new sight and will be checking it out soon.  I love muzzle-loaders.com! They're always super fast with shipping and have some of the best prices around.

Mt Devil, I had figured it would break that's beyond the point.  The point is that plastic molded swivels are junk.  :bash: CVA trying to skimp us on the most basic features of a hunting rifle.  Previously I put my sling on the gun and the plastic is so thick it rubs on the swivels makes a squeaking sound going through the woods.  As stated in my previous post i ground down and put in place a metal post for the front and that works great.  I will be doing the same with the rear mount soon it's just disappointing in my opinion to see CVA skimp on such a low cost piece of the gun.  They could have easily and cheaply put steel posts which makes a world of difference for anyone who actually uses a sling.

I contacted cva and they said indeed the nipples were softer then the firing pins and they are sending out new breech plugs to anyone that has one. So I have 4 coming this way. Havent even had a chance to shoot mine yet so I will have the new breech plug hopefully before hitting the range.
