Whitetail tips and tactics?
« on: December 03, 2017, 10:30:14 AM »
Hey guys so I’m planning on hunting timber whitetail next year. Spot and stalk and still hunting. Im used to mule deer and black tails so I was wondering if someone with experience was willing to let me Pick their brain. Would appreciate it if you pm me. Thanks!
If its brown its down... or black... well if it has four legs.. or webbed feet... or fins... ok, ok if its edible!

I will be going rifle. Multi season wreaked my bow hunting passion. Too many people in the woods now. I will be hunting up north.

If you are still or spot and stalk, creep your way through as slow as you think you can, then go slower. Few steps and stop, look around for a bit, then repeat. Look for those tail or ear flicks or white throats patches in the trees. I have found mountain whitetails will hold pretty tight until they figure out what you are unless you are moving too fast and making too much noise.

I meant more along the lines of hunting draws or ridges. High or low. Brush or old growth. Pre rut rattling? Are clearcuts any good? Etc

I am going to assume it will be late season so if so, rattling COULD work but it is still a little early. The last couple days is when the rut seems to start to kick in. I have had my most success up there hunting it the same as archery, be it from a tree stand or ground blind on travel routes between feed and bedding areas. Whitetails don't really care from clearcuts too much and prefer to go from thickets to slightly more open but still timbered areas.

If you think there are too many people hunting archery, wait until you hunt rifle!

I know I’m screwed either way. Hoping I can cover some ground and escape 90% of them road hunting.
