Cabelas gun counter entertainment
« on: December 27, 2018, 12:44:06 PM »
Had to exchange an xmas gift so I wandered past the gun counter at Cabela's and couldn't help but overhear the conversation between the gun counter employee and the fellers next to me. 2 guys pointed at the Savage 110 in 338 Lapua and asked what it was, and the employee's explanation was pure gold. "That is a 338 Lapua. That is an elephant gun. Had two guys come in here and buy a couple last week, they said they were going to be for long range hunting. There is nothing around here that you should be hunting with that gun, I don't care if it is at 1000 yards. You shoot a deer or elk with that and all that will be left is the head and a couple nubs for hooves. That is for shooting elephants and rhinos, not deer and elk." The 2 guys seemed pretty impressed, and I got a good chuckle out of it. I needed that today

I was in Sportsmans in Burlington a few years back, before they shut down, and a guy was purchasing a rifle.  Looked like a Savage.  The gun counter guru had it unboxed and they were getting it all checked out.
The guru was adjusting it for his eye relief by the looks of it, I didn't pay too much attention, but he had the scope loose in the rings and they were playing around with it.  They stood out to me by how loud and "knowledgeable" they both were. You know the type, loud enough for everyone to hear.

He must have gotten it where the guy wanted it and then proceeded to tighten the scope back down into the rings.
Only he had the scope sitting 90 degrees off, the windage knob was on top, elevation on the left hand side.

I had to say something, so I asked if it was the new left handed model scope.

After an elbow to the ribs by my wife, she quickly moved me along.  She wasn't impressed.

One could only hope. Also said the reason why they had so many AR10’s and so few 15’s was because, “who wants 30 rounds of .308 when your shoulder is bruised by the 5th shot.” I think he overestimates the power of certain cartridges.

Sometimes, yes. Sometimes it's guys in their retirement years with nothing else to do or want to do.
Sometimes I hit the shops to browse since I don't keep stock and periodically I get a windbag across the counter from me. It's always entertaining. Even more so at gun shows when I'm being out right lied to in hopes to catch a sucker and make a sale.

That's why at these gun counters just go in knowing what you want. Be Ron Swanson "I know more than you" and get out lol. 90% of the time the guys behind the counter are just there on rent and will be rotated out in a month. at least in my experience. :chuckle:

A busy gun counter, especially in a chain store, is often more entertaining than a comedy club.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Asked a Cabelas employee once if they had the fish hook hat clip like Larry the Cable guy wears. He asked who Larry the Cable Guy was.

I’ll have to admit I have been that guy before, although I wouldn’t give bogus information. :dunno:
I worked in a sporting goods store for several years.  I didn’t have the hunting background, but I could tell you what the fish were biting on that day.  When the owner wasn’t there, the girls at the store ask me ammo questions. If you needed to know if we have the product I can find it.  If you were looking for a recommendation I’m not qualified to know what ammo you need but I can sell you a license.   :dunno:
You really need to know what you want before you get there.  :sry:

Gee, I guess there shouldn't have been anything left of the antelope I shot this year with my 338 Win. Mag. according to the Cabela's "gun expert."  Funny it just made a hole going in and a slightly bigger hole going out, probably about the same as my 30/06 would have done.   :dunno:

Jeez, I've been considering a new job.....Maybe I should apply at one of these places. I don't know everything, but I enjoy the outdoors and know quite a bit about some stuff. I definitely wouldn't just try to make stuff up.

Well a 338 win isn’t a Lapua now is it.?  Lapua shave mystical powers almost equal to creedmoors. Never mind the fact that your 338 shoots the same 338 bullets.   :chuckle:
