Duramax LB7 Injectors
« on: June 11, 2019, 09:02:06 PM »
I bought an 03 Duramax and it needs new injectors. Wondering if anyone here has done this repair themselves and if so, how difficult was it and how much time did it take?

I’m also interested in the best place to purchase the injectors (which injectors?) and installation kit? Cost is a factor. Has anyone used a local shop to have Duramax repairs that they would recommend that are fair and reasonably priced?

I’m not 100% sure I’ll be keeping this truck so I don’t want to spend top dollar on this repair. Thanks for the help.

On the 03s you have to pull the valve covers on both sides. Its pretty involved. Ive heard book time is 8 hrs. For a DIY a couple days wouldn't surprise me. Go over on the Duramax forum. Tons of good info.

Where did they have it done? The research I’ve done shows that you can pay anywhere from $1500 (remanufactured)-3000 (new) for a set with installation kit. $1500 sounds about right for labor.

Also, considering just selling it AS IS so I don’t have to hassle with it. I’m replacing some small things that have been neglected on it already.

Coach on here is a heck of a mechanic, I had him replace my injector pump on my 06, did a great job and was reasonable. Not sure what his business's name is, he's just north of Seattle I think.  @coach. Or. #coach

they had it done in NE Oregon where they live, I think that was all they had done, but maybe there was something else they did while they were at it. $4k sounds steep, I did the injectors myself in my '99 Powerstroke but that was pretty easy. I think I got Reman. injectors for $400 each through a buddy. again way different pickup

The 06 LBZ is cheaper and easier. You can replace whichever injectors are bad. They are on the outside and way easier to get to. The earlier model Duramax engines they recommend replacing them all at once because they are so labor intensive to get to. My LBZ is still running strong on original injectors with 225,000 miles on them.

Have you tried cleaning them yet?

I did this on my 06 lbz and noticed a difference. They dont make the AcDelco stuff anymore but I found it on ebay. The lb7s are known for bad injectors. I think when they first came out they had a recall for them. Good luck

I did mine on my 7.3 Powerstroke, these guys were great to deal with. https://www.thoroughbreddiesel.com/2003-chevy-silverado-2500/ipmm190986435502t/?HideOptionsEditButton=True

They have many different injector options too, I just posted up their 24 month warranty OEM.

I did mine myself many years ago. It was a big job but I just took my time. If you are going to do it yourself I would strongly suggest Lincoln Diesel. Then you can call them with questions if you run in to any snags. I did and it was a great help. I took my time and finished it in about a week. Truck ran great afterwords and no more white smoke at idle.

As trophyhut said Coach (Cory) is very good and reasonable. His company is called Automotive Inc, they are in Kenmore 206-522-6100. He even delayed a hunting trip to get my daughters Blazer on the road before heading out.

'01 Duramax here  :hello:

I ordered mine from https://www.injectorsdirect.com/ as it was the best deal and my buddy replaced them for me. You'll also need to get the little cups they sit in as well as all the gaskets and high pressure lines. IIRC it was close to 4 grand for everything. Are you positive they need to be replaced?

Yeah they need to be replaced. JET chevy ran a diagnostic on them a few months ago for the guy I bought it from and they said the #8 injector was bad and since then the white smoke has gotten worse so I’m assuming another has cracked as well.

It sounds like injectorsdirect aren’t a bad source  as long as you buy the Remanufactured and NOT the refurbished. And agreed, for a job this involved you replace them all at once.

I was told the injectors were originally replaced at 90k miles and now the truck has 190k so it seems about time to do it again. Thanks for the responses.

I have decided to sell it without doing the repair. I realize I’ll get significantly less because It won’t pass emissions as is and needs to do that in order to get current registration. It’s an 03 with 196k 4x4 crew cab. Very clean inside and out, spray in bed liner with matching canopy. Leather and Bose speakers.

What’s is worth as is? $9-$10k? I see others 03s with similar miles go for $15/$16k.
