New beaver mittens
« on: January 18, 2020, 10:43:58 AM »
The wife made these for me from beaver and elk hide and I am super proud of them.  We even had the weather so that I could wear them instead of just petting them  :)

I havenít figured out how to add more than one photo to my post but I will post more

Not lined at all.  They are sized to wear another pair of gloves/mittens under them.  My experience with gloves is that they can get really stinky and I wanted to be able to change out liners quick and easy.

Very nice work!
Did she hand sew, or use a machine?

Hand sewn.  She is getting it figured out and building some momentum.  She finished a pair for herself today and has a couple of more pairs for a buddy and his wife to get started.

I would like to get her a fur machine, but I am just in the research phase.  If anyone has any leads or suggestions on one to get speak up.

I have one.I bought it new from a place in seattle. the C.H.Holderby co. 206-622-6646
The brand is  Typical the model is Gp5-IV overseaming machine
I looked at old used ones and they would barely sew coyote. This thing will sew beaver. It is super fast. There is a learning curve for sure and i'm still in it. My daughter and i are making pillows and going to make bed spreads to sell.
Fur to fur isn't bad. The pillow we did a different material on the back and it wants to feed one side faster then the other causing it to wrinkle and move a little. The machine is excellent though, I think the operater is the issue.I can't find anything on line that shows techniques on useing them.

She made her own patterns based on what she able to find online.
Ran up some mock-ups in flannel to be sure it would work and figure out sizes.

They are beautiful!  Very warm, too.

I have a BONIS brothers sewing machine.  It sews with one thread.  Some times I have to pin the fur sides together and take the pins out when the needle is just an inch away,  but I'm slow sewing.  You'll learn to guide the sides together and push the fur downe.  I think my machine is almost as old as I am. We bought it used, but in good shape.  You buy the machine and you have to learn by yourself.  It is completely different from my Bernina (about 30 years old) for fabric.   Good Luck!

The mittens take two beaver per pair and leave plenty of scrap for other projects.
