What's in your Caribou pack
« on: March 31, 2020, 08:12:38 AM »
So with the prospect of a AK Caribou trip in my future plans, probably 2021, it's never to early to plan..

Since most transporters have weight limits of around 50lbs of gear. What did you need and not have or have and not need.  What worked best for you to get your gear to 50lbs. I always over plan and my day pack for deer and elk averages 20-30lbs.  So I nees to cut out some fluff.

Some items I'm curious about, trekking poles, waders, gaters, spotter or binos, or both, one rifle per two guys...and so on.

Trekking poles are good to have for hiking over the tussocks. Alaska is one big boggy swamp so I’d have either muck boots or some type of hip or waist wader so you can cross streams and get around in the swampy stuff. Depending on where you are hunting you may end up on a ridge top and not need either. That’s a conversation you’ll have with your pilot though and where the caribou are depends on where you get dropped. When I went up there caribou hunting I was thinking ridgeline hunt but ended up down in more of a wet swampy area. We were prepared for both.

If 2021 is your target you need to get on trying to find a transporter now because a lot of them are booked up already.
