Quality rifle Swakane tag
« on: June 11, 2021, 06:00:26 AM »
Lucky enough to have drawn a Swakane rifle tag. We plan on spending as much time scouting as we can. Any insight and tips will be welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Congrats

Scouting isn't a huge benefit as far as bucks go because they migrate in and weather is a big factor. Its good to get an idea of roads and lay of the land. This tag isn't what it used to be but what Muledeer tag is. If you have the time and can pass on 140's there are still real good bucks in there
Good luck

:yeah: all of it. Later in the season is better but if you get early snow early can be good too. Good luck and have a blast.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

 :yeah: :chuckle:

And good tires.  With a spare..

Spend a weekend driving roads in the late summer..then assume most of those roads will have snow on them come the season.

Scouting does no good. Buck's will just show up. Have a goal and try and stick to it until the last couple days.

My  :twocents: is get into some kind of physical shape. Depending on where you're at there are some tall and steep hills to climb and hidden draws that can hold some nice deer but you have to put the boots on the ground to get into them. I have seen and talked to lots of road hunters who are were not willing to climb a hill. There have been times where I have not seen a single deer to 20+ on one hillside (it was an all day climb to chase them down).
Heed the advice of those who say good tires, a spare and chains are a must if there is snow. Some of the roads are quite rocky and slick when wet or covered in snow. It's beautiful country but the weather can change fast so be prepared. Hot and calm one minute then cold with severe winds then calm with snow. Son and I had our tent blew over with us in it one afternoon, that was an experience.
I will be up there on east end of the unit on Swakane Canyon Road at the pheasant release site hunting with my son during the youth opener and beginning of the disabled hunter week. Likely again for the general opener which is during the general rifle. Canyon gets crowded that weekend.
God Bless,
Scott
