House breaking blues-any suggestions?
« on: December 05, 2021, 05:40:56 PM »
Our new (we’ve had him a month)Golden Retriever pup is smart as a whip and cute as can be, but he’s not doing so well with house breaking. He doesn’t seem to get it. He makes it through the night and we really try to stay on top of it so he doesn’t have accidents, but he still finds a way to go on the floor a couple times per day. Last night it had only been like 15 minutes since he’d been out and he walked over between the wife and I, made eye contact and peed on a towel I’d used to dry him off from our last trip out.

I’ve had springers and labs, mostly males, currently a two year old female lab, and have not had this much trouble. I don’t think it’s anything physical, because he makes it all night. Any tips? He’s confined to the kitchen (tile floor) but this is getting old.

He needs to be let out after every meal and every nap. He will figure it out fast enough that everytime he eats or wakes up He goes to the bathroom. Don't bring him back in until he does his business.

Dogs want to please. I’ve always shamed the turd not the dog. Flip side, I praise the outside duty…… but some dogs required a nose in the mess and a toss outside. They are all different, you have to figure out what works for each individual dog.

We’re taking him out promptly after meals naps etc. and try not to ever go more than 30 minutes without taking him out (when he not in his crate) every time he goes he gets high praise and a little treat. He knows why we’re out there, but sometimes it’s like he forgets it all. I suppose he’ll get better with age, but sure would like to hurry that up

This time of year sucks for trying to house train a puppy--weather.  Find a spot outside where you want them to go and secure a cheap 10x10 pop up tent.  Grab a folding chair and take him to that spot every time. Grab a beer/smoke or a chew and tell him to go potty then obviously bring him in with praise when he does.  Another thing I did was to pee in the spot as well with him out there.  He will learn that is "his spot" to do the business.  I've never thought rubbing their nose in an accident in the house did any good other than making them pissed off at you.  A stern NO at that should be enough.  Most of them are smarter than we are.  I had one female that was a problem until I figured out she had a UT infection...after that cleared up she was good

I wish you well.

We have two dogs currently.

One never pees or poops in the house.

The other dog she prefers to pee a couple times a day in the house and poop in the house at least once every other day.

She pees and poops outside just fine.

The last three families that had her each got rid of her because they were never able to get her to stop peeing or pooping the their houses

As goes with rescue dogs it's generally three failed placements... and well....

But we don't rescue dogs to let them fail and be put down.

Most dogs we have ever had eventually could be trained to not pee or poop in the house.

Positive re inforcement, treats, all the usual stuff.

But we currently have one that just never subordinated to the training.

They are all different.

We just can't see having a dog put down because she messes in the house sometimes.

We got a real nice carpet shampooer and some towels...

We buy lots of the Nature's Remedy Odor and Stain Remover... they make sprays that you can get to spray on the area where they mess in the house and for most dogs that stuff works real well. Its got an odor that supposedly is offensive to dogs and that whole dogs pee to mark their territory thing, this spray stuff supposedly is an odor type of training tool while at the same time helps to keep the stains managable. Its readily available on Amazon.

Your dog is very good looking and appears very happy to be with you in your home.

I wish you and your puppy all the best.

It could be that you are missing his signal to go out. We had one that would walk past the door then come sit by us. She would then get up and pee on the floor. When we finally realized her signal, accidents in the house stopped.

I had another that could last all night in the crate, but during the day would pee out of the blue. She had a urinary tract infection.

Good luck, he is a cutie!

We will be watching closely to see if we may be missing his signal. He’s going in Wednesday for some boosters and a checkup, so I plan to ask about a uti then thanks.

Things are going a little better, thanks for the tips and encouragement. I think we were missing some subtle cues. There’s nothing subtle about our lab and she was house broken in a couple weeks, I think it’s just a different dog, with different tendencies and we have to keep after it. He got his boosters yesterday and everything is on track. He’s doing great on walks and learning basic commands.

just put a 25' drag check cord (NO knot on the end) let her Road and run)! Did this with my Irish Setter, Let her learn, smell then learn the woods! Great start here! :IBCOOL:
She should check back with you IF she knows the "come" command.. DO NOT bitch at her if she takes aBit. BUT every time kiss and send her off again with a head tap and say GO!
