Columbia River Salmon / Steelhead gear

I'm sure I'm going to get a million different answers for this but hear goes . Buddy bought a 20' Jet yesterday for fishing and neither of use know a whole lot about Salmon/Steelhead fishing . I've been with a guide a few times so that's about my depth of knowledge. Anyway I want to get own setup for the boat . Right now I have a 9' Uglystik MH action pole I got for a birthday years ago . Will that work or should I get a shorter ,  different action pole ? Pretty sure I want a Baitcaster with line counter, any brands / models I should look for ? Gonna have alot more questions about line , hooks , weight , flashers , all the other small things I'm sure

Line counter reels are pretty nice. I started with Penn 210 reels, caught a lot of salmon. I'm now swapped over to Daiwa Accudepth line counters. I'm still using a couple downrigger rods from my Lake Erie days back in the 80s, and have a newer Cabelas brand downrigger rod. They work fine. 20lb trilene mono line.

You haven’t given enough info on the rod to know if it will work well. But the okuma low pro line counters are great reals. Cheap rods 8.5-10’ all will work. You want them in 10-30# range. Action isn’t that important but medium would cover everything.

A good alternative to a line counter reel is the multi colored line.
A 9’ MH ‘should’ work fine. I do multi use with nearly all my gear, and catch fish. The fish don’t know.

Think I'm going to grab an Okuma Guide Select carbo series rod ( thinking 9'6" possibly 10' ) and an Okuma Coldwater Lo Pro reel for myself  . The wife or one of my kids can use the Uglystik when they go .

I have several Okuma low pro line counters (6).  All have 30lb braid except one it has 65 lbs with a 10’6” lammi. Great trolling reels for salmon steelhead anything you troll kokanee. I don’t cast with them very much, hardly at all. You probably can though I don’t just me.

I have never been able to cast a Baitcaster reel  .

I bought into the addicted promo’d gear, the 10’6” okuma guide select classic rods XH 4-16 oz rods have been stellar for me. I paired them with the okuma low pro reel with counter as well, great combo. I’ve trolled bait, super baits, flatlined plugs, backbounced   Bait and everything in between. Been happy, going on 3 years now and not a single issue with this setup. Can get pricey though although comparatively cheaper than other setups. Looking at about $280 a rod (rod, reel, line). Well worth it though, I’ve got 4 setups on my boat.

Bought a 9'3 Okuma Guide select the other day . Gonna throw a Tekota 500 Line counter on it . Also found a deal on a Lamiglas/ Okuma low profile reel , that I'm picking up after work . Guy also has a pile of flashers ,  super baits etc that I'm getting .
