Interesting video. I once watched a Raven chase a chipmunk around a tree trunk like that, course the Raven was flying. Never caught the chipmunk.

That's a cool video.  I've only seen two pine martins in the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie national forest and one down on the GP in my lifetime.  Neat vicious little predators!

Great video!  I saw martens chase squirrels through tree limbs several times while roaming back country in B.C.  Never saw it on one clean tree  like that in the video.  Two times when the marten noticed me watching, it stopped chasing the squirrel and just watched me.  Both times that was on a steep slope when the marten was 30-40 feet up in a tree below me which put it at eye level with me on a contour trail up the slope.

One time with a couple of friends in a tent trailer with the flap open, a snowshoe hare hopped to within a foot of the open flap and sat there.  We looked out and a pine marten was circling some dozen feet away, wanting the hare but afraid of the humans.  Sorry, tangent.

Martens are fun critters to watch:  cute, gorgeous fur, nimble and quick, and don't seem very smart sometimes.

Awesome video, thanks for linking it.  There was a lot of energy consumed for no meal.  That Pine Marten was getting tired.  Ferocious little critters.  Had one get into my cow elk in Idaho down by Stanley in '20.  My buddy was packing it out and he found himself face to face with a big male as he was chewing through the bags.  He actually fed the little bugger a piece of meat on the end of a stick.

I had a buck down and was gutting it when I was in my 20's.  Naturally the Grey Jays congregated and were "helping" me.  All of a sudden there was quite the commotion in the spruce tree right next to me.  A Sharp-shinned hawk had caught a jay in the tree, practically falling out of the tree and getting his wings under him just above ground level and flew off with a possee of screaming grey jays chasing him.  The woods got eerily quiet after that.  Nature is fun to watch.

Five years ago I was doing a timber cruise on the Floodwood Road in northern Idaho, on a cool day in October.  One plot I hit was in a bit of a frost pocket, and had a single tree, a subalpine fir well below its normal elevation.  As I went to take the diameter of the fir (about 7"), I saw a flurry of motion at my feet, and a young pine marten spiraled up the tree, stopping right about a foot away from my face (wish I could have gotten a better photo).  It stared intently at me, changing position every 15 seconds or so, for about two minutes.  I was in a place that few people would ever go, except for the loggers who would cut the stand, and it occurred to me that I might be the only person this pine marten had ever seen (or ever might see!).  They are amazing little critters.

Do Marten's ever catch squirrels?

Seems like an elk playing with a pack of wolves.
