Anyone ever try the bear crack method?
« on: June 04, 2023, 07:49:37 PM »
Wondering if anyone has tried doing the "Bear Crack" thing at their bait sites or any  other deviation of a burn at your sites. Any success?

Up in Alaska I used to do honey burns, they work great. Start cooking the honey in the evening, 30 minutes later bear down. Of course this was after the bear had become accustomed to feeding at my station.

Sorry for not clarifying. I am hunting Idaho. This is not a trap.

Back when baiting was legal, it was hard to beat a honey burn.
So, see no reason why the "crack" wouldn't work..

what was your method? ive heard of guys using a can of sterno and letting it burn slow for hours, ive also heard guys burn marshmallows and jello real hot to get black smoke rolling. ive never tried a burn.

Actually, the long slow burn with a sterno was how we started....
Slow, and let that sweet smell go....
.
I actually think the trick was to not be deeper than an inch...

.
When it dried up and started to smoke, then you put a new "can" underneath....
..
But, I don't know if the new cans get hot enough..
.
This was late 70's, early 80's....

And yes, it was hours..
.
But when we left?
Big crispy lump of ash was all that was left..

Back in the day when we all got along and baiting was legal, I tried cooking 1 pound of bacon over sterno. It didn’t work!
Much more enjoyable now chasing them in the high country.
