Late Season Whitetail/Predator Combo
« on: November 06, 2023, 05:54:55 PM »
I'm heading East this weekend for my first late season WT hunt. GMU 121. I've also purchased a double jackrabbit predator call to try my luck at calling in something else if the deer hunting is slow. Any advice on the predator part of my hunt?

Does anyone else try this?

Will it scare deer away?

What are the odds I call in a wolf?

Well it would be illegal to shoot a deer while running an electronic call.

Does anyone else try this? No

Will it scare deer away? Maybe, maybe not

What are the odds I call in a wolf? Extremely low

I wouldn't blow on a predator call in the same spot I wanted to deer hunt.  I don't have experience in the NE, but have done a fair bit of calling on the palouse.  I have seen a wounded rabbit call clear out every deer in an entire drainage within seconds.

If I were you I would try calling from different locations than I was deer hunting.  Or switch over to a fawn in distress call.  Could get a curious doe interested and a tag along buck.

I'm in the NE  .....
I don't really mix the two together.
But I also live here and not just for a weekend.
So I get that totally.

If it was me......
I'd probably keep things quiet ,hunt deer mourning and evening.
Maybe do a midday predator set for an hour or something.
Or even just save the predator calling in case you cut a set of cougar tracks in snow or mud.
But it's your call totally. :chuckle:
Another tip I can give maybe setup next to some heavy cover.
Or in some timber. Predators around here play in the clearcuts at night. Not so much during the day.  An example would be set your call on the cut line of a clearcut, not in the middle.Another tip that won't really effect you though. Unless you make a return trip.
Day after modern close , predator season starts.
Woods get quiet, most predators are hungry from all the increased human activity.
But ya , mourning, evening,id be hunting deer.

Ohh ......
If you could post a general area,GMU,or something that would be great.
Cause even though I like predator hunting,we need more active hunters, hunting predators.
I'm gonna be deer hunting and want to avoid ya like a plague.LOL.

I also want to add...
That I did hear a story.....
Of a hunter last year doing what your thinking.
Guy said deer hunting sucks here,so he did some predator calling and ended up with a nice mature tom.

Keep in mind.....
Your required to wear orange with deer and elk season going.
Your not allowed to shoot deer while using an electronic call.
I'd probably hold off if there is a lot of active deer hunters around.

Like said .....
After the story last year,I don't think it's out of the realm of possibilities. Maybe try an hour, see if anything happens. After an hour,if you don't have crows flying over checking you out. And other birds of prey. I'd probably move location to try again.
Crows will tell ya if it sounds good or not.
This weekend will be pretty busy I suspect.

Everyone saying electronic calls are illegal for deer are correct, but isn't the double jackrabbit predator call a mouth blown call?

Unless it is something different than this??
It is better to be consistently incorrect than inconsistently correct...

I would say if your using a hand call ,shoot all the deer you want.

Correct, I have a hand/mouth call.

Thanks for all the feedback. I agree that morning and evening will be for deer unless I cut some extremely fresh bear or cougar tracks.

I'll be in 121.

I might not use it, but thought it made sense to atleast give myself the option. That's a cool story about the guy who got the big Tom.

The amount of whitetail does I’ve called in at night with a predator call is probably higher than the number of coyotes….

I live in the late buck area.  The local deer numbers are way down,  don't expect the situation like previous years of bucks running does readily seen.  As far as a predator call I usually call in at least one buck a year with a call.  The predator call works as well as doe bleats, buck grunts or rattle bag.  My favorite call is a Critter call, standard size.  Do not call a lot, early and late be quite and watch, midday call.

Thanks to all for their feedback. We had a great time and learned some new country. Saw a few deer. Didn't fill any tags. Lots of hunters. People we talked to said they have never seen that many camps.

I tried the predator call a few times to no avail. It didn't spook any deer away.

Sucks you couldn't connect with a predator or deer tag notched.
There was a lot of people in some spots.
I have a feeling I know where you was .
Beautiful country, not a lot of deer,a lot of people.
Predators are pretty shy with all the people out and about.
Come back and try during bear season, September or after modern alot more quiet around.

Forgot to mention, I'm quite sure we heard wolves one morning while up high in the fog. They were a ways away from us.
