Wyoming trip 2023
« on: November 05, 2023, 01:32:19 PM »
Since 2005 I have made an annual trek to Wyoming in the September - October timeframe. When I started I hunted antelope in the Casper area. That worked out great for the first five years or so. I met a resident who had access to a few large private ranches, and licenses were relatively easy to get. I was able to take some nice bucks with a couple over 80 inches. Type 6 doe antelope licenses were available for most years to provide additional hunting opportunities and meat.

Then a few hunting organizations like Huntin’ Fool started publishing glowing reports of the hunting in that region, and almost overnight the ability to get licenses took a big plunge.

I decided to start over and switched to hunting the north central part of the state. The units I selected  had very little public land, which made getting licenses relatively easy. The first few years were fun but challenging. After a few years of hunting and learned where the animals hung out I was able to contact a few landowners who allow me to hunt their properties.

Hunting is partially just an excuse for me to go to Wyoming in the fall. That part of the world in the fall is always enjoyable to me regardless of whether or not I am hunting. I think I would go every year even if I couldn’t hunt. Adding Yellowstone to the trip has been a nice bonus of the trips in recent years. I enjoy seeing the bison and other animals and getting an occasional dose of geysers.

The trips are also a chance to fill our freezer. This year I was fortunate to return with the meat from two doe antelope and two whitetail antlerless deer. While the past winter was particularly hard on deer and antelope in many parts of the state, the ranch I hunted has good numbers of antelope and whitetail deer. When I checked last there were still over 600 leftover antlerless whitetail deer licenses in the deer unit I hunted, primarily because it is almost 100% private and the deer in that area survived the winter a little better than they did in other parts of the state.

Here are a few photos from this year’s trip.

Great pictures, looks like it was good weather.  Do you fish why you are there also?
