Newish Hunter looking for people familiar with WA to hunt with.
« on: December 04, 2023, 08:30:11 PM »
Hello,
Joined this forum yesterday and figured I’d write an introduction post.  I have gotten more into hunting the last few years and would really like to expand my scope as a hunter.  So far I have only ever hunted private land owned by friends or family.  Shot my first buck when I was 13 but unfortunately shortly after my dad who was a lifelong hunter messed his back up really good to the point of having surgery after surgery and just couldn’t really hunt anymore.  So for a long time I didn’t hunt again until about 3 years ago I decided to get back into it . and I feel I’m a bit behind the curve.  I’ve got some family that I visit and hunt with out of state and have been fortunate enough to harvest 1-2 doe there each season the last 3 seasons.( The area we hunt there the deer population is running wild so each hunter can purchase 4 dmap doe tags).  A little about me, I’m 31 years old and live near marysville/Arlington/Lake Stevens area.  I work in wildland fire  and am no stranger to being in remote areas and camping/roughing it in the elements.

I joined this forum in hopes of finding people to hunt all species of big game WA has to offer and possibly waterfowl and upland bird as well.  I don’t have a ton of hunting gear/gadgets that you’d accumulate over years of hunting but have been slowly acquiring what I need the last few seasons.  I have a couple of hunting rifles in calibers suited for anything from whitetail to elk/bear, and have an 870 for bird hunting.  I do not have any problem with trophy hunting and people that are after the big racks etc, however my main interest in hunting is to provide wild game meat for my family and I.  If there is anyone here who wouldn’t mind hunting with/possibly mentoring a somewhat inexperienced hunter that would be ideal.  I have taught myself to field dress my deer the last few seasons and have been becoming more competent with the butchering process each passing season, however I have always gutted my deer in the field and hung them up to remove the hide and process the meat, I have never quartered/butchered an animal on the ground but would like to become proficient in that as well as I would like to get into hunting remote areas confidently.  My job requires a lot of hiking/navigating so I can read and navigate a topo map.  Sorry for all the info but just want anyone who might be interested in hunting with me to have what I believe to be an accurate assessment of my skill level/experience.  If there is anyone who needs a hunting buddy that doesn’t mind accommodating my lack of experience especially with public land hunting in Washington please feel free to reach out.  I look forward to the opportunity to learn from and hunt with any of you seasoned hunters.  Or if there is anyone else who is new to hunting or similar to where I am at I wouldn’t mind figuring it all out as we go with another novice hunter as well.

Look forward to meeting/hunting with you.

Thanks for reading

The NW chapter of our organization meets at Twin City Sportsmen’s Club 26933 64th Avenue NW Stanwood, WA 98292 the second Wed each month. They will buy your first round of clays  starting at 6pm and the meeting starts at 7pm. This chapter is fairly active doing cleanups, blind maintenance, and presentations from the department in the greater Skagit valley.  They also have a mentoring program but it is a little late in the season to get hooked up with that. Both the chapter and state have a FB page and our website is https://washingtonwaterfowl.org/  Hopefully we will see you at one of the meetings!
Our Mission

Preserve, protect, and promote waterfowl, waterfowl habitat, and waterfowl hunting; particularly in the state of Washington

To that end, we teach folks about waterfowl, waterfowl conservation, sportsmanship, shooting, hunter safety, and waterfowling. We also study, advise, recommend, and secure enactment of legislation in the interest of waterfowl, their habitat, and waterfowl hunting.

Welcome to the forum. I'm not anywhere near you, so I can't be much help. Nice introduction. I'm sure others here will be a source of great information to you.
