Henry’s Lake, Id.

Anybody fished Henry’s Lake Id.? We’re heading to West Yellowstone  in early July for 3 days and trying to decide if it’s worth towing the 16’ Lund SSV all the way for maybe 3 days of fishing.

Just towed mine back from there. Wasn’t fishing, but it’s a cool lake and generally has good fishing. Don’t know that’s it’s worth eating up a day or half day when you can hit some world class trout streams near by for an hour or two in the evenings or mornings. Pack the spray or a side arm if that’s the plan.

Hmm, hadn’t thought about that. What streams would you recommend?

Henry’s Fork is right there and a number of tributaries off of it, warm river isn’t bad either but it’s a little bit of a drive from west Yellowstone. Some sections of the Henry’s fork are barbless or fly only also.

I fished Henry's lake 10 years ago in the middle of summer. We just drifted around casting spinners and caught some beautiful brooks and rainbows. Easy fishing on the edges. Course this was a long time ago. I would say if you drive by and its not too windy go give it a couple hours. my 2 cents

That is about 1.4 Million fry and Fingerlings last year alone.

We used to fish there with my uncle. He had a couple of deep holes they knew about and we would anchor on the edge and then cast into the hole.  We would use a big bundle of night crawlers squirted with W-D 40, fished off the bottom. Caught some big rainbows almost every trip.

Fished it a few times. There's a good fly shop nearby that helped us with lure selection and strategy. The big yellowstone floods happened so we couldn't fish the river really due to flooding.. the lake seems to get real weedy later in summer and it's real shallow for the size.  Be careful on the lake because if wind picks up it can get real sketchy. It's an awesome lake with big fish and would absolutely recommend. Like other said there's tons of rivers to fish close by, even the Madison isn't far. Let me know if u got any more questions

Epic fishing for potentially lots of giant trout. I’d take the boat. Are you fly fishing or gear fishing? The fish key in on the massive amount of bugs in the lake which makes gear fishing not that great.

Apparently the trout don’t pay much attention to gear due to the massively prolific bugs in the lake.

I fished it some time ago.  I worked the rocks with a mariner shrimp I think is what it was called, essentially a large scud pattern.  Also a …..blood shrimp (I can’t recall the name), a Canadian pattern from a famous lake up there with similiar conditions(Alzheimer’s is running strong today) Tunkwa I think.   Red, with black bear across the back, also a “scud/shrimp like pattern.  Fish were footballs.  Fished 4x cut back as they’d slam it.

I've fished it 3 times and never used Flys and had great succes.. (family gear fishes only so maybe that's why) trolling spoons slowly is what worked the last time I was there. Guys probably do better with flies, but when we went it was a lure show. There's maps of depths and maps of good locations to fish in town aswell. Idfg was really helpful to last time we called. Either way it's a great lake with great tasting fish.
