When I moved to the coast from ONLY fishing fresh water I ignorantly thought, "Fishing is fishing, my stuff will work". Well, some of it maybe, but it was quite an abrupt and rude awakening once I got here and started fishing salt exclusively.I only went fishing (with a boat) ONCE here (first time) without checking tides and weather. That was NOT a fun outing. I also froze up and ruined two NON SALT rated reels by not washing them down right away. That sucked. While lighter weights CAN be used at times, I would say it is not the norm, and there is a pretty small window (slack tide) where they are useable for the most part. Yes you can, but I have gone heavier for most everything these days. The numbers posted by the others are on point. Just be ready to change up if you need to.
