Boring & relining .22 barrel, any recommendations?

As in my earlier post about getting my Marlin .22 mag back that was stolen and in non-functioning condition, I have since gotten it relatively cleaned up and firing. 

Have an issue with it extracting a fired case, but likely needs the chamber better cleaned up with and polished and the bolt torn down for a deeper clean as well. 

What I am thinking about is that since I replaced it right after the theft with a new Marlin .22 mag, I really don't need two.

Looking to see if anyone has any idea on the feasibility of having the barrel bored clean and a new sleeve installed in .17 HRM and where something like that could be done, if it can be done??

I know the Marlin barrel is pinned in and possibly "glued" as well and would like to talk with a gunsmith that is familiar with this process, so hoping for some recommendations.

In the meantime, pulled the moldy wood stock out of an overnight soak in white vinegar and got the bulk of the "live" mold off.  After air drying will check it to make sure it doesn't have any big warps or other damage then start refinishing it if it is good to go.

I've used a punch to remove the pins and remove a pinned barrel before on a 22lr.  I don't remember if it was a marlin, it might have been.

I've never bored out a barrel and re-sleeved it with a different caliber.  But my initial thoughts are that it would be so time intensive, plus the cost of a 17 cal blank that must be chambered and then cut down to fit inside your bored out .22 barrel......you would be money ahead to just go buy a new 17 hmr.  Then use your old .22 mag as a wall hanging, sell it, or give it away.

To clean up your .22 mag barrel further.....you could get a .22 mag chamber reamer to carefully re-scrape the chamber and clean it up. And/or tape some fine grit sand paper on the end of a thin rod, chuck it in a drill, and spin that in the chamber to polish it.

What got me thinking about the possibility of this is that there are actual liners for installing in several calibers, to bring an old, shot out rifle back to life. 

But early searches are coming up with out of state gun shops/smiths that do this and was hoping for some contact info with any "local" smith's that might have experience with this.

Also have email & call messages to some of those smith's and I am waiting to see if I get any returned.

The idea of turning a full barrel down would be ridiculously expensive as stated, but with the popularity on the .17 cal just looking to see if any are doing that caliber or just limited to .22 cal. which apparently has been a fairly common repair, especially on older rifles.

I'm NOT a gunsmith. 

What are available in readymade barrel liners today differs substantially from what was available. Basically you can get TJ's or Redman liners these days.  Parkerrifled and Diller, among others were what are known as "heavy liners" and suitable for jacked bullets.  TJ's are hammer forged and Redman button rifled.  Redman sells a 17 caliber liner for 17HM2 and cautions against using it for 17HMR.  TJ's, I'm not sure on. 

I would be extremely reluctant to spin abrasive cloth or paper with a drill motor in a chamber and as for "scraping" with a chamber reamer... Chamber reamers are awful sharp, or they are garbage.  They are also expensive.  You rent it and chip it and you bought it.  Out of round chambers are the usual result of Bubba going to town on a chamber.  Big 45 pad wrapped around a 17 caliber bore brush or worn out 22 brush and turned are a better bet unless you have experience.   

If that rifle was made in 17 HMR, you might stumble on a barrel but unless that Marlin was something that is commonly fitted with custom barrels the only real source for a take off would be from guns sold that were seized and the receiver cut and the rest sold as a parts kit.  Maybe, you could come up with a rifle with a missing bolt though.  I that case you normally would just swap your bolt in and check headspace. 

If it were mine, nobody would know what it's fate would be, but I'd probably dig out a 17HMR CZ 455 or 457 barrel and cut it off and cut the chamber off and turn a new shank, file in the extractor cuts and chamber it then glue it in with green Loc Tite Bearing and Stud mount.

I saw the photo in the other thread and it's not really that bad.  The stock can probably be bleached, but birch is hard to stain and have look good.

Soaked the stock overnight in vinegar and killed the mold, then a brushed it with a stiff nylon brush and left to dry slow over night. 

Seemed to have cleaned up decent, just a lot of stains left behind now.  Going to try a little sanding to see how that does, worse case I just paint the stock if it looks too bad.

The barrel was by far the worst as it had about 7" blocked solid and no matter what I tried just couldn't get past it.

Finally went to Home Depot and got a 12" x 3/16" drill bit and that finally cleared it! 

Several passes with smaller, then slightly larger brass brushes and a bunch of patches and the barrel was clear, so clamped it in a vise and used a string to pull the trigger and it fired just fine.  But the bigger question is will it group or "pattern?"   

Got the action in a vinegar soak to try and clear any rust inside the barrel. 

Before I do anything to the chamber, I think I will break the bolt down and do an inspection and cleaning of the interior.  As of the test fire, all I had done was an external cleaning to get it to slide in & out of the receiver, to be honest I was surprised it actually fired...

Harbor Freight sells PB Blaster by the gallon for by far the best price.  That is good to soak anything in that has rust.  A mild solution of bleach in water is good for stains.  I buy more 320 grit than any other sandpaper and rarely use 220 and even less 180.  I’d stick with 320 grit, it will be fine.  USE SANDING BLOCKS, never freehand sand a stock.  I talk a lot about it in the link posted in the Stevens 44 1/2 I redid the stock on that I posted here.  There are a lot of photos, but if you need more or tips PM me and I’ll see what I can find in other projects I have posted on or can maybe walk you through it.  The PB blaster is about $20.at HF

Not that I could see at the time with the naked eye (I don't have a magnifying glass at the moment), and both test fired cases were "clean" once I got them out as in no marks or scratches on the sides.

If you don't see an obvious bur as if someone kept dry firing without protection, I would suggest clean the chamber and put some 220 grit oxide cloth on a dowel inside it. Give it a decent polish, not a high shine, if it looks like it needs it.  Or you might need to check the extractor and extractor tension.
