Razor Clamming this weekend

By chance did anyone razor clam yesterday, Friday?   Thinking about heading over to Grayland for this afternoon's low tide.

Grayland today. Gorgeous afternoon. Bit slow. Hour and half for 2 limits. Most folks I've ever seen on 'our' beach

Twin harbors last couple days. Weather is nice, dug in a t shirt, clams mediocre size

On LB. Dug 2 days. Many smaller sized and hard to find shows. Most folks we talked to had same experiences.

Two different areas tried, 20 miles apart. Similar results. Got limits but took 2-3 hours.

Ditto on what Nock Nock reported. Tough shows are a thing. I have dug clams for 55 years . Three or four years or so I was having a tough time while some others were tearing it up in the same area. I approached an elderly lady and asked her what I was missing. She said that if you think you saw a show, dig it. She was absolutely correct. Clam shows that disappeared in one blink of the eye. As I pounded the sand they were nothing but a flash. It was like you were imagining you saw them but did not trust your eyes. There was a lot of those Thursday and Friday !

We made it out for Saturday's dig.  The closer it got to the 4:20 low tide, the easier it got.  Got our 2 limits in about an hour.  And I'd agree, not the best shows, compared to previous trips. Great weather!

Took me 65 minutes Saturday to dig a limit in Grayland, though I was picky for the first half after starting out with a couple small ones. Dug one mossback, maybe 5-6 medium size and the rest were pretty small unfortunately. Took over 15 minutes just to dig the last one! I was done in 22 minutes on the 14th.

Talked to a few neighbors down there. One group dug 7 limits two hours before high tide in twenty minutes on Saturday. The other group dug three and eleven each on Friday. Definitely seemed like a mixed bag of experiences this weekend.

Tough digging on Saturday.  Ground out limits but they were mostly small clams with some mediums.  The weather made it worth it though.

I heard yesterday was much better for showing/clam size.  I never understood how things can change so much day to day when the conditions stay mostly the same.

Yesterday was a beautiful day afternoon and easy digging. A mixed bag of mediums and small sizes. I do better if I don’t dig the ones my gf picks out for me to dig. I like to see the hole developing. You get a better idea of the size of the clam. I can be fooled if the shows are crummy or just digging donuts !

I dug yesterday at Copalis.  Amazing conditions on the beach!  Was really hard to find better shows. Necks were showing for the last half hour or so before the low tide, so that made it easier to find better clams.  But I was digging maybe 1 out of every 20 shows.  Really surprised at how few bigger clams there were.

To those with lots of experience, do you think size depends on how low of a tide there is?
It seemed like if I stayed basically in the water(the closest possible to the ocean) that I got bigger clams.
Lots of folks pulling above where the waves never hit while you were digging, but the clams were deeper, and mostly smaller.    I am still newer at this.

Generally speaking, I would say yes. You can find a higher % of bigger clams lower in the tidal zone.  I think they don't get picked off as often as higher up which is exposed many more times, not that you can't find some bigger clams there.

That makes sense to me too.  Clams that only get exposed on a -1.5 only get dug a couple times a year.  Clams at 0.0 get dug every two weeks from October - May.
