Powder
« on: November 30, 2009, 05:41:26 PM »
I am trying to find a powder to use in multiple calibers. I am currently using IMR4350 And IMR4831 but i cant find either of them in stores so i am thinking i need to switch to something that is less popular or a little more consistently in stock. this might be a tall order but i will be loading for .22-250 .243 .25-06 7MM-08 .30-06 and 300 WSM. What would you recommend? I was thinking Reloader 17  :dunno: ... Thanks for any input.

I do not think you will find 1 let alone 2 powders that will be the end all for all those calibers.  I prefer to have a powder that excels in 1 caliber, and find one for every caliber I own.  Once I do, I buy 3 or 4 lbs. and store it in a dry space, that is locked.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Just give up now. I once dreamt of that and it didn't work out. Surrender to the dark side.

Well if you're looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle, how about a rem mod 7 in 243?  Put a nice Leupold 3.5-10 x 40 VXIII on it and you're good to go.  Nice small, short rifle just right for a young girl.  .243 recoil is very light and will kill any whitetail or muley nicely.  Then if she gets tired of it or better yet upgrades later, you've got a (or another) great coyote blaster.

I also love 4831 and also had a hard time finding it. I was heading out of state and needed some loads so I bought some R22 and some H1000 for my 257, 243, and 300 win mag and 30/06 respectively.
As luck would have it I stumbled upon a cache of 4831 that I can get anytime. A small mom and pop store that only the locals know about. I bought two pounds and they have cases left.
Send me a PM and I'll tell you more

Varget or H414

I am sure that is great powder, but to be honest, have never used it.  I have found other powders that give me absolutely fantastic velocity and accuracy.

.338 WM  RL19
7mm-08  Varget or Win 760
.257 AI   Ramshot Magnum
.300 WSM  Magpro

all of which I found fairly easily during the shortage last fall and winter.
