Back from Iowa - Nice Buck - Monster got Away
« on: December 27, 2009, 08:31:08 PM »
4 of us got back from Iowa last week.  We took 3 nice bucks and 3 does.  The 12 ga. Mossberg shotguns with rifled barrels, scope and Winchester XP3 saboted slugs worked great.  Two of the bucks were taken over 180 yards.  We had a chance at the local "Legend" when it popped out of a ditch right in front of the pickup and my brother got out and snapped a shot off and got a piece of it but we couldn't recover it.  Two days later nearby landowners finished it off - 18 total points.   I did nail a respectable whitetail at 50 yards after my brother jumped it out of a ravine.  Great trip.

We were near Atlantic - a little over an hour east of Omaha.   No pics yet of the one that got away - hoping the lucky hunters post up somewhere.  The landowner we were with went back the next morning to look for blood - the buck jumped up  right in front of him but he hadn't gotten his gun out of the truck yet.  In Iowa you can't road hunt - guns must be secured in a case on the roads, seat belts on, no walkie talkies or cb's allowed, no mesh or camo orange, no quartering or boning animal in the field, must tag them before gutting, have to call in harvest report within 24 hours.   Lotta rules there.   My buddy hitched a mile ride back to our truck and in that time got in trouble for not having his shotgun in a case and the farmer who picked him up got in trouble for not having orange on while "hunting" and not having his seatbelt on - this is on a gravel farm road.   Whew !

That's a great looking buck!  No pics of the "legend"?
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Nothing wrong with that one.  How much bigger was the monster one.  I would of been happy with the one you shot.   :chuckle:
